Children per W. G. Davis, "The Ancestry of Annis Spear" (1945), pp. 103-104: John, George, Margaret, Humphrey, Arthur, Simon and Henry. "The Truth About the Pligrims," Francis R. Stoddard (Baltimore: Gen. Pub. Co., 1993), pp. 78-79 posits a descent from John Howland of London, Gent., who was granted a coat-of-arms 10 June 1584. Henry m. Queen Elizabeth I (daughter of Anne Bolen, Henry the VIII 's second wife and Mary's sister) granted the Howlands their Coat of Arms in 1584. He [John, the Mayflower Pilgrim] was one of five children: four sons and a daughter. Henry came to Plymouth sometime before 1633 and Arthur came sometime before 1640. Genealogists have been hired by members of the Howland descendancy but still not a great deal has been found. One English Genealogist, Col Joseph Chester said in a letter of 1879: ...I find the surname of Howland in no other county in England than Essex, and originally in no other locality in that county except at Newport and Wicken and their immediate vicinity. Wherever at later periods I have found Howlands in other counties...I have invariably traced them back to Newport and Wicken...Several families of the name were living contemporaneously and equally so that they were all in some way connected...At the period of the birth of John Howland of the Mayflower there were living then no less than five John Howlands. Two of these families ended with only daughters. One Elizabeth bequeathed the Streatham Estates to her husband, the Duke of Bedford who then acquired the additional title of Baron Howland. (Families of the Pilgrims, by Hubert Kinney Shaw, p. 106) The Coat of Arms used by the New England Howland family is the same as the one granted in 1584 by Queen Elizabeth I to the Rt. Rev. White, MD married 65 years. Carol was a registered nurse who graduated from Eastern Maine General Hospital School of Nursing in Bangor. Carol received an award for proficiency in nursing and helped with recruitment of new students. She was a head nurse at a neonatal Methodist Hospital in NY City. She assisted her husband in his practice in Caribou for thirty three years. She was a very active member of the United Baptist Church, a member of the sanctuary choir, a soloist of Gospel concerts throughout the State of Maine and New Hampshire and she was an accomplished first soprano singer who recorded two Gospel records. She also coordinated and directed 'The Living Christmas Tree' and Easter cantatas for many years. She was the founder and coordinator of the Caribou Bi-centennial Chorus, which evolved into the Caribou Choral Society as a permanent organization. It was her delight to develop a repertoire of classical music based on scripture and familiar Gospel to express her love for her Lord to those who would listen. She will be sadly missed, particularly for her kindness and her unwavering support for her family."
