[413] See "15 Generations of Whipples: Descendants of Matthew Whipple of Ipswich, Massachusetts, Abt. 1590-1647: An American Story," Blaine Whipple (Baltimore: Gateway Press, 2007), four volumes. Matthew left half of his estate to his eldest son, John, and the other half to the two younger sons, Matthew and Joseph. His will also mentions daughters Anne and Elizabeth. Matthew (Sr.) was for many years a Deacon of the Congregational Church at Ipswich. In 1638 he and his brother, Elder John Whipple, received a grant of more than 200 acres. The earliest mention of Whipple is Richard Wiphull, Wiltshire, listed in the Hundred Rolls of 1273. The Exchequer Lay Subsidy during the reign of Edward III (1327-77) lists William de Whipfulle and Richard de Whyphull, both of Somersetshire. In 1385 a William Whelple, cordwainer, is found at the Court of Hustings, London (proved 1398). A Rev. Mr. John Wyppyl of Rotherfeld, Sussex is listed in Early Chancery Proceedings (ca. 1502-04). In the Essex Lay Subsidies for12 February 1546 at Braintree we find Thomas Whipple. We have no idea how these relate to our line, if at all. The basic reference for our line is "Descendants of Matthew Whipple" and a Whipple Genealogy by Henry Waters, both at the Ipswich Historical Society. A descendancy from Matthew's son, Joseph, is reputed to be offered in "Byram-Crawford and Allied Families Genealogy - Revised Edition," Dorothy Roberts Chisum (Wichita Falls, TX: Nortex Press, 1976).
