They were married on 24 Jul 1845 in Atchison. Sarah was the oldest of two other siblings beside herself: Mary Susan (1848-1942) and John Henry (1850-1934). 'The Humes descended from a long line of Scotch nobility which dates back to about 1020 A.D. Crinian the Thane, a nobleman before the Norman Conquest (1066), married Princess Beatrice, daughter of Malcom II, King of Scots.' On 1862, age 16, she married George Washington Hume in Knox, Fremont County, Iowa. In 1880, age 35, they lived in Sidney, Fremont County Iowa, where her husband George was a farmer. In 1883, age 38, they moved to Palouse, Whitman County, Washington and purchase wheat land. In 1887, age 42, they resided in Whitman County. In 1900, age 55, she became a widow when her husband George died before the census in June. She had given birth to 15 children with 12 of them living at that time. She was listed as a farmer with three oldest sons in their twenties working the farm. In 1910, age 65, she was in Elberton, Whitman County, listed as a farmer with William (44), James (39) & Silas (26) working the family farm and Effie (24) helping out. In 1912, age 67, she helps celebrate her daughter, Artie Mecie's, 50th wedding anniversary with Robert Edward Burns. In 1920, age 75, she is living with her sons Sabird B (44) farmer, William (55) dairy farmer, James (49) stock farmer and daughter Minnie Yackley (31) in Fall City, King County, Washington. In 1930, age 85, she is living with her sons, William (65) who has his own farm, Sabird (54)county road worker, and James (58) county road worker, in Fall City."

[494] Thomas and William are prominent names in the lineage given in Burke's "Landed Gentry" (p.641) which begins with Robert Wydecombe of Martock, Somerset, M.P. for Shrewsbury in 1420-21 and 1433, m. Benedicta _____, and had as second son THOMAS Whitcombe (m. Edith, dau. & sole heir of Adam Maveysin of Berwick Mavesyn, Salop -- Thomas and Edith had Thomas, living in 1484, m. Elizabeth ______ and had Thomas who was a Freeman of Shrewsbury in 1493, m. Isabel [dau. of Thomas Poyner] and had William of Berwick Mavesyn [m. Blanche, dau. of Roger Best of Atcham, Salop] whose will is dated 1587...). For ancestors and descendants of Thomas see: Whitcomb Genealogy which states that the first recorded ancestors of this line are Thomas Whitcomb and wife Edith Mavisyn who were b. ca. 1399 (shown as grandparents of Thomas). The Genealogy and Burke's are in apparent disagreement on the line. There is confusion between the names Wydecombe and Witcomb(e). Whitcombe in Dorset and Witcombe in Gloucestershire are named with Old English wid wide + cumb valley; Whitcombe, Isle of Wight, may have the same etymology or alternatively the first element may be Old English hwit white. Witcombe in Somerset is named with Old English wiðig willow + cumb."
