[47267] Fiind A Grave memorial 108795260 provides Philip's obituary: "Philip Boyd Gray, 87, died Monday, March 28, 2011, at Penobscot Nursing Home. He was born April 13, 1923, to Harold and Mabel C. Gray. Phil was proud to be born in the house he was raised in and spent his boyhood years working on the family farm. He graduated as salutatorian from Clark High School, Penobscot, and enlisted in the Air Force in 1940. After a church service in Walters, Okla., Grandmother Young brought the young airman home to have a nice hot meal, where he met his future wife, Betty Sue Young. They stayed in touch during his three-year military career and were married Christmas Eve 1943, during a horrific storm. He received an honorable discharge with the rank of sergeant. Phil and Betty were blessed with six children, two born in California: Phyllis and Steven, and four in Castine: Jean, George, Joyce and Byron. For a time, they were a bi-coastal family. The Gray family farm had a menagerie of animals, but Philip's passion was always for the horses. He loved giving sleigh rides in winter, hay wagon rides in summer and even pony rides in the wagon for the children. Most knew Philip from his 30 years with the H.O.M.E. Co-Op, Orland, where he was in charge of building homes for low-income families and coordinating the volunteer groups. Philip was much loved by the people at H.O.M.E. and all the volunteers. "Don't worry about it, just nail it!" was Phil's catch-phrase and many homes were built based on this motto. Earlier, Phil had varied career including work for a railroad company in California and a logging camp in northern Maine, where his family was able to travel with him. For several years, he was a foreman on a potato field in northern Maine and was later employed by two local mines in Cape Rosier and Blue Hill. He retired from his work with H.O.M.E. at 62 to spend more time with his loving wife, Betty, affectionately known to him as "Bet." Philip is survived by Phyllis and Loyal, Jean and Harold, daughter-in-law, Amy, Steven and Julie, Joyce and Tim, Byron and Richard, daughter-in-law, Wendy and Dennis. Philip is also survived by his sister, Pauline. His legacy includes 22 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews. Phil was predeceased by parents, Harold and Mabel; wife, Betty; son, George; and great-granddaughter, Kallie."

[5126] Henry and Sarah had John (b. 31 Oct 1653) and Henry (b. 11 March 1652) in addition to Sarah (b. 28 Jan 1660). Henry was a freeman at Ipswich, Mass. in 1634; was elected Representative in March, 1635, didn't serve; moved to Newbury, Mass. in 1644. {-"A Genealogical Register of the First Settlers of New England...," John Farmer, 1829 (reprinted 1983), p. 264.} Sue Schwinn on Prodigy 12/91 wrote that Henry was brother to Elizabeth Short who m. Nicholas Holt; from Holt genealogy: "The will of Henry Short dated February 13th, 1672, in Essex County, Massachusetts...states in case his children, Henry and Sarah, die without issue, the next heir is his cousin [nephew] Samuel Holt, and if Samuel fail of issue his brother Nicholas has the estate. This Henry Short came to America in the `Mary and John' in 1634, and settled in Ipswich and later removed to Newbury, where Nicholas Holt and Elizabeth had their first home. It may have been Henry Short's reports of opportunities in the new land which induced his sister Elizabeth, and her husband Nicholas, to set sail for Boston and to go on from there to Newbury...Henry Short was brother to Anthony Short who was in Newbury in 1635. The year before he had been in Ipswich. He was one of the first settlers of each place; he left no issue. Henry was Representative in 1644." Henry's will was proved 19 June 1673. - from "The First Three Generations of Holt Family in America," by the Holt Association of America, 1930. This book states that Henry's son, Henry, was born in 1652 according to Sue Schwinn's posting. Henry Short was first Town Clerk of Newbury. His estate shows a large inventory including "a negro man" (a slave). See also Titcomb's "Early New England People"; Pope's "Pioneers of Mass." Tomm McLean (TMcLEAN@aol.com) reports via email in June 2003: "I have Henry Short (b. 1609 in Walberton, Sussex, England, d. May 5,1673, m. Sarah Glover. His parents were John Short, d. May 27,1638 in Walberton, and Joan Beeding, d. Jan 5, 1645 or 46." - this is not documented or verified. See "Pioneers of Massachusetts - 1620-1650," Charles Henry Pope (Boston: New England Historic Genealogical Society, 2013), p. 414.
