When April First rolls around each year, I celebrate a birthday, for it was in 1919 on that day that I was born; the second of three sons to Dr. & Mrs. Willis Wild Bradstreet of Rochester, New York.
I don't recall my age at the time, but the earliest recollection I have of any kind of an earthly existance is the day that my father took me fishing for the first time. I can recall standing on a bridge over the outlet of Irondequoit Bay hoping for my first fish while my father told me about how all young people have their tonsils removed. Becoming more engrossed in his sales talk than fishing, I made my first real mistake by saying, "Let's get mine out." Still not realizing the fishing trip and the operative talk were all the part of a big, well laid plan, I left the "ole fishin' hole" with my father for a fast trip to his place of practice.
I don't recall entering the office or the conversation on the way. I do recall being surprised to find two other doctors waiting in their white coats and an operating table, all in readiness. And most of all, almost as though it happened yesterday, I can recall putting up the biggest fight any ether weilding doctor ever encountered!
From that time on, accounts are better remembered. Like some years later when my father took me to Canada on a fishing trip. No tonsil talk here, just plain fishing and "man talk" and a feeling of growing up. On our way to Buck Lake, I remember my father stopping at Gananoque. Here he bought a very large doll. I asked what it was for, and he explained that he had remembered a promise he had made to a little girl that he was treating back in Irondequoit, that he would get her a doll before he left for his fishing trip. He mailed it from Canada.
Although fishing remained a great love to me, I devided my time into whatever the great outdoors had to offer or to the sports in season. Besides hunting game birds, and animals, I spent my early years playing baseball, building model airplanes and enjoying summer days at my father's cottage on Canandaigua Lake. When 14 years old, I built a model airplane from my imagination which was a dead ringer of the stealth bomber of today. One difference, my plane was powered by a rubber band!
In 1934 I was enrolled at Staunton Military Acadamy in Virginia. While at the Acadamy, I played Varsity Baseball, was Captain of the Rifle Team, played Varsity soccer, joined the Silent Drill Team and the Woodrow Wilson Literary Society. My Baseball coach was Captain Howie who later became Major Howie who was killed while entering the City of St. Lo in France during World War II. A Hollywood movie would later be made of this event. The Commandant at SMA was Major Patch who later became General Patch. He was in charge of troops who took back several islands from the Japs.
In 1937 I graduated from the Acadamy after advancing from Private to a Second Lieutenant, passing all my subjects, pitching several baseball games, leading the rifle team to a couple of trophys and falling in love with Mary June Hagaman, who became my wife in 1939.
Mary June and I spent our honeymoon at the World's Fair in New York City. Arriving back in Point Pleasant, we lived with my parents for a while, later moving to an apartment on Culver Road. We later had a home built on Vosburg Road in Webster. This would be where we started bringing up our four children, Barbara (Boots), Richard Jr. (Richie), James (Jim Jim) and David (Charlie Brown).
One thing that comes natural for a fella in love is the desire for work and to build for the future. This desire led me to the Eastman Kodak Co. in Rochester, New York. A month after filing my application for work, I was hired as an assistant, making water-proof liners for the shipment of photographic film overseas. For some odd reason this job brought out some hidden mechanical ability that I never knew I possessed. This ability advanced me to better jobs and more money. I retired from Kodak in 1979 with a technician rating. I was responsible for the design and building of experimental and prototype machines. Three patents at Kodak are under my name.
Highlights of marriage, of course, are the children that bless a home. Our marriage saw the birth of four children. Barbara, our only girl came first, although all preperations had been made for a boy. Blessed with beauty and common sense, Barbara today, is the mother of two boys, Paul and David, and her only girl, Elizabeth. Richard Jr. came next. A kid with a humor and mind of his own. He provide us with childhood laughs and a language yet to be diciphered. Next came James Wayne who soon adopted the name of "Jim Jim". Jim knows what he wants in life and determination is in his corner. David Forrest, the last born, is gifted with many talents, and will no doubt excel in any one of them.
My later interests would include hunting, fishing, horse racing, rebuilding cars, caring for family pets and writing sports articles. For several years I wrote the weekly sports column, "Wildlife and the Sportsman" for the Irondequoit and Greece Press. In 1950, I copywrited and published a book, "Fishing Log Book." A thousand copies were sold.
So a family has grown and I, like other fathers, once in a while look back to the "old days." I recall my first new car, the bachelor days, the sand lot ball games and friends never seen and surely never forgotten.

[5777] Halfdan I, King of Vestfold (tribal chieftan), is known as "Whiteleg." He m. Assa (b. ca. 700, dau of Systein) according to an unverified Web site in 2003: http://www.stirnet.com/HTML/genie/ancient/tz/viking03.htm He was King of the Soloër Islands, Raumarike and Hedemark, Toten, Hadeland, Vestfold, all in Middle- and South-Norway, and later also Vermeland, king of the Upplands in Norway, who, having been Swedish, left Uppsala and migrated to Norway. See also http://www.mythopedia.info/ancestry-avesnes.htm (2003). For a chart of his genealogy, see http://www.friesian.com/germania.htm#orkney. http://scheie.homedns.org/3HistoryOppegaard.htm offers: "Halvdan was brought up by his uncle Solve, his mothers brother, and became King of Denmark about 710. Some of the Swedes, meanwhile, had decided they had been wrong to blame Halvdans father Olav for the famine; the real problem was over-population. So they sent an army against Solve, killed him, brought Halvdan back to Sweden as a prisoner then made him king. Eventually, he became a great king in Vestfold, in what is now southeastern Norway. There he married Åse of Oppland, the daughter of Oystein the Severe, King of Oppland and Hedmark (where the Scheies and Myklebys, respectively, came from). Halvdan lived peacefully and died in his bed as an old man in 740. Halvdan and Åses son was Oystein Halvdansen Freet, born in 710, who married Hild Eriksdatter, the daughter of King Erik Agnarsen."
