[55010] "The Ellsworth American [Ellsworth, Maine]," 24 October 2023: "Ellsworth - Lewis Dean Mitchell Sr., 77, passed away in his Ellsworth home on Oct. 20, 2023. Lewis was surrounded by family while holding the hand of his wife of 53 years, Clara Mitchell. Lewis was born Dec. 24, 1945, to parents Roscoe Mitchell of Milbridge and Iola Pinkham of Steuben. After primary school Lewis immediately went to work providing for himself and his family. On Jan. 23, 1970, he married the love of his life, Clara (Chick) Mitchell. Lew spent time working the woods, clamming, and running his junkyard as well as working at Allen's Blueberry for many years before settling in as a truck driver for the City of Ellsworth in 1988. Lew loved to drive. He spent the next 25 years there, driving trucks and plowing snow. He dedicated many days and long nights to the on-call lifestyle that Maine winters brought. There were often years his birthday cake would be put on hold and his family would wait for his return once he had cleared the roads on his route. He took responsibilities to work and his town seriously - he truly loved it. After a brief retirement, he got bored and went back to truck driving for C. E. Grant Trucking. When he wasnt working, he could be found on his ATVs, racing (in his younger years) at the speedway and spectating there as he aged. He loved riding his motorcycle alongside his son Dean, tinkering in the garage on his 65 Ford Galaxie with grandson Sebastian or whatever project had rolled through its door. Hed cruise to town twice daily making Dunkin runs - returning with coffee for his wife and daughter Doe. Always sure to have a donut in hand for his great-grandson and 'Little Buddy' Mitchell, who referred to him as his 'Donut Delivery Man.' Lewis graciously donated his time every Friday, gathering food from The Good Shepherd Food Bank to deliver to the Blue Cross Food Pantry in Lagrange, run by his daughter Tracey. Lewis owned and operated a lawn mowing company for several years with his son Lewis Jr. They focused on local cemeteries, priding themselves on ensuring the veterans memorials each had flags posted before the holidays - he was absolutely adamant about it. He was a gambler at heart - poker with the boys or bingo at the VFW and always had a scratch ticket within reach. A fan of old westerns, 'M.A.S.H' and Andy Griffin, although were unsure how he learned to watch them while he 'rested his eyes.' Lewis was the definition of a family man. Inside his home, he was almost exclusively known as Dad, Daddy, or Pa. Hearing his actual name called was a rarity and typically saved for Clara when someone had already called for him too many times - we joked that it was selective hearing. He was the kind of man who would drop everything for his family and friends. His family was his entire world - a love that was unmatched. Holiday functions were a must for 'Pa,' and he went all out every time. Hauling kids around on the four-wheeler at BBQs, dressing up as Woody on Halloween, attempting to deep-fry a turkey on Thanksgiving (probably the only thing he ever failed at). July 4th involved more fireworks than should have been legal for one family, and Christmas gifts took over the living room in December. He was tough as nails but had the softest heart. He was warm, and full of life right up until his last days. He is survived by his wife Clara and their children and spouses; Dean Mitchell and Valori Mitchell, Ann Howard, Doe Cook and Dale Cook, Tracey Holler and Jason Holler, and Lewis Mitchell Jr. and Rema Mitchell; his siblings Richard 'Dickey' Grindle and Diane Stubbs; sisters-in-law Vadeen Pinkham, Janice Garland and Celeste Cram; brothers-in-law Frank Chick and wife Candy, James Chick and wife Hazel; as well as 16 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. Lewis was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Norman Grindle and wife Charlene, brothers-in-law Robert Pinkham, Edmund Wallace, Ashel Cram, Tony Chick and Austin Stubbs, sister-in-law Linda Grindle, as well as his great-granddaughter Leeona Warren."
