[51245] "Bangor Daily News [Bangor, Maine], 1 September 2022": "Mars Hill - August 31, 2022, Sandra Snow Barrett Smith Leighton, 93, went to be with her Lord and Savior in Heaven. Sandra was born October 18, 1928, the daughter of George Washington Barrett and Beatrice Snow Barrett. She grew up as an only child in Robinson, Maine. After completing her elementary education at Robinson Grammar School, Sandra attended Aroostook Central Institute in Mars Hill, graduating in 1946. Shortly after graduating, she married Keith Everett Smith August 14, 1946, and they had seven beautiful children. Sandra enjoyed teaching Sunday School and Pioneer Girls, and loved spending summers with Wendell and Margorie Grew at Squa Pan Lake. Sandra valued family and enjoyed many memories with her parents, as well as her in-laws, Louise and Ivan Smith. She and her sister-in-law and best friend, Margaret Murdoch, loved to visit each other and have debates about the best butter, ice cream, and orange juice. Anyone who was around them knows the value of Houlton Farms Butter! Maggie and Sandra were Co-Salutatorians at ACI in 1946: they loved a good competition. Sandra attended the University of Maine at Presque Isle from 1967-1971, and graduated with distinction. She later earned her master's degree from the University of Maine in 1975. She continued her higher education and attended Indiana University, University of Southern Maine at Gorham, Bowdoin College, and Bread Loaf School of English at Middlebury College. Sandra taught at Presque Isle High School from 1971-1980, as well as Limestone High School from 1980-1998, where she was the Chair of the Social Studies Department, National Honor Society Advisor, Youth in Government Advisor, and Citizen Bee Advisor. During this time, she met Charles Raymond Leighton in 1975 and they married a year later. In 1998, at age 70, Sandra began working as an Adjunct Professor and SAGE instructor at the University of Maine at Presque Isle, where she remained until 2006 when she officially retired. Sandra placed great value on education, both her own and that of her students and family. Numerous students will attest to her lifelong impact on their lives, along with great memories of field trips to historical areas like Boston, New York City, Washington DC, Quebec City, and Model State Legislature in Augusta, Maine. Sandra was a devout member of both the United Methodist Church of Limestone and the United Baptist Church in Mars Hill. She enjoyed her time as a member of the Limestone Rotary Club, along with her dedication and love of genealogy research while being part of the Maine Mayflower Society and the General Society of Mayflower Descendants. Sandra's greatest legacy will be her faith and love for her gracious Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and her unconditional love for her family and friends. She was our greatest prayer warrior, spending many hours in her day asking for God's protection, healing, and grace for anyone in need. Sandra taught us to trust God's will whether in the valley or on the mountain top. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her in-laws, Ivan and Louise Smith, and Harold and Sarah "Sadie" Leighton; her family members, Aunt Ella Barrett Dunn, David and Gerry Dunn, John and Sandra Dunn, Frank and Harriette Dunn; Carl and Priscilla Smith; Joyce and George Witherell; Pastor Buzzy Smith, Maggie and Hal Murdoch, Laurie Linder; Donald, Peter, Joel, and Andrew Tweedie, Ella Harvath; her former spouses: Charles Raymond Leighton and Keith Everett Smith; her sons: Jeffery Harry Smith, David Matthew Smith, Nathan Lee Smith and his wife, Ruth Haynes Smith.
