In 1714 she had married Philip V of Spain (1683-1746) who was was afflicted by fits of manic depression and increasingly fell victim to a deep melancholia, and she quickly obtained complete influence over him. The Triple Alliance thwarted her plans to recover the ancient Italian possessions of Spain, and at length in 1720 the allies made the banishment of Cardinal Alberoni a condition of peace. Sicily also had to be evacuated. And finally, all her entreaties failed to prevent the abdication of Philip, who in 1724 gave up the throne to his son by his first wife, Louis, who however died after seven months and he was recalled to the throne. During his later years, when he was nearly imbecile, she directed the whole policy of Spain so as to secure thrones in Italy for her sons. In 1736 her son Don Carlos became king of the Two Sicilies. She was born June 4, 1934 in Orrington, the daughter of Harry and Bernice (King) Hanscom, Sr. Charleen was a graduate of Brewer High School. She and her husband of nearly 50 years, Elmer 'Giff' Giffard built their home in Orrington and raised 3 children. She was a homemaker, and later worked at Porteous and volunteered at the Ronald McDonald House. She loved life, friends, and most of all the time she spent with her family. Charleen also enjoyed camping, gardening, sewing, knitting, and needlework. She and her husband, 'Giff', spent summers at Jenkins Beach and wintered at The Great Outdoors RV Park in Florida. Charleen is survived by 3 children, Scott Giffard and wife Lorena of Orrington, Sheryl Grimes and husband Donald of Holden, and David Giffard and wife Samantha of Brewer; grandchildren Courtney Arthers and husband Nicholas of Hampden, Matthew Grimes and wife Kathleen of Berwick, Joshua Giffard and Emma Giffard, both of Brewer; Magan Laweryson of Augusta; Chad Ryan and wife Krissy of Corinth; great grandchildren Abigail, Canaan, Lauren, Nathaniel, and Kaitlyn; 2 sisters Mary Hamilton of Bangor, and Beverly Rogers and husband Robert of Orrington; a brother Harry Hanscom and wife Judith of Orrington; brother-in-law Edward Campbell of Brewer; several cousins, nieces, nephews; and great friends. In addition to her parents, Charleen was predeceased by her husband 'Giff'; brothers George and wife Ethel, Roland and wife Margaret, and Wendell and wife Carolyn; brother-in-law Dana Hamilton; and a sister-in-law Blanche Campbell."

[5325] George Plantagenet, Duke of Clarence (1449-78), son of Richard, duke of York, and brother of Edward IV, king of England, born in Dublin. The title duke of Clarence was revived for him in 1461 by Edward, and the following year he became lord lieutenant of Ireland. In 1469, in defiance of his brother, he married a daughter of Richard Neville, earl of Warwick. During the Wars of the Roses, Clarence first supported Warwick and the deposed Lancastrian king, Henry VI, against his brother Edward IV, but he later turned to aid Edward and the Yorkist faction. After the death of his father-in-law in 1471, Clarence shared the Warwick estates with his brother Richard, duke of Gloucester (later King Richard III), but retained the title earl of Warwick. Suspected of seeking the crown, Clarence was imprisoned, convicted by Parliament, and murdered in the Tower of London. His only son, Edward, earl of Warwick (1475-99), was imprisoned in the tower at the age of ten and was beheaded on the order of the Tudor king Henry VII.
