[47773] "Lykens Register [Lykens, PA], 28 December 1899," p. 3: "This week one of our old veterans answered the last roll call. Joseph Ritzman has been a sufferer from miner's asthma for about eight years, to such an extent that he was unable to work, and recently dropsy set it which rapidly brought him to his end Wednesday morning. He was born Aug. 18, 1836, near Gratz. His father died when he was a young man, and he started to earn his own living in early life by learning the trade of shoemaker at Berrysburg. On Dec. 30, I860 he was married to Elizabeth Ellinger, then of Uniontown. Soon they moved to Elizabethville and later went to Fisherville. In September 1864, he enlisted in Co. A. 210 Reg. Pa. Vols., amd his wife returned to her parents until after the close of the war. May 30, 1865, he was honorably discharged, and with his wife settled in Wiconisco where he has been a resident these many years. About eight years ago his wife died, and since that time he has been making his home with his children, of whom seven survive him. They are Mrs. Thomas (Rebecca) Bateman, Mrs. George G. (Agnes) Schreffler, William Ritzman, Grant Ritzman, George Ritzman, Mrs. Charles (Nora) Shadel, and Mabel Ritzman. Two brothers, Baltzer Ritzman of Shamokin, and Jacob Ritzman of Millersburg, and a sister, Mrs. John (Sallie) Ficel of tbe same place, also survive him. The funeral will take piace on Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock, going from the house of his son-in- law, George Schreffler on North street, to the Wiconisco cemetery, where interment will be made, after which Rev. A. H. Souillard will preach a sermon in the U. B. church. The G. A. R. Post of this place, will attend in a body."
