[2002] A strong queen, she administered Castile and supplied her son Ferdinand with troops and provisions during his wars. http://www.guide2womenleaders.com offers: "First she governed in the name of her brother Enrique I (1204-14-15-17). Later she divorced - under Pope Innocent III's orders - from her second-degree cousin King Alfonso IX de Leon (King of Leon 1188 -1230). When her brother died in 1217, she renounced her rights in favour of her son, Fernando II de Castilla, and she acted as his regent, according to the Cronica Latina, her 'total intent and desire being to procure honor for her son in every way possible'. She helped quell the rebellious nobles, and then arranged for Fernando to marry a high-born wife, Elisabeth of Swabia. She often found herself politically at odds with her former husband. Alfonso had two daughters, Sancha and Dulce, by an earlier wife, and wished to disinherit her children in favour of these daughters. To this end, he invited Jean de Brienne to marry his eldest daughter and thus inherit his kingdom. She sabotaged this plan by convincing Jean to marry her own daughter, also named Berenguela, instead. Later, in 1230 when Alfonso died, she and her son Fernando acted to set aside the rights of the older daughters, and seized the Leonese throne. She maintained close connections with her sister, Queen Blanche of France . . . ." Cf. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Berenguela_of_Castile.

Also see http://www.geneajourney.com/thweng.html [not verified] for his ancestry and which reports: "Called a royal knight and banneret in 1260 and 1261, when he was granted robes by the King. Marmaduke went on pilgrimage to Santiago in 1262, and in 1264, he was summoned to join the King under arms and was captured at the battle of Lewes by Hugh le Despenser (to whom he owed ransom of 700 m). He was summoned for service against the Scots in 1258, and again in 1264 and 1283 against the Welsh. He was granted the right to hold markets and fairs in Thwing, Lund, and Coatham in 1257. In 1272 he obtained the manors of Danby, Brotton, and Skinningrove, as well as the town of Yarm in Yorkshire."

He removed to Rowan County, N.C., and eventually Camden, S.C., where he is said to have participated in the Battle of Camden on August 16, 1780. He married Elizabeth Raymer in Maryland. James Veatch lived two more months and died Oct. 29, 1780, also supposedly of wounds sustained in the battle. Gen. James Clifford Veatch, a great-grandson of James and grand-nephew of this Isaac Veatch, "was born near Elizabeth, Indiana, in 1819. His father Isaac Veatch was a member of the Indiana House of Representatives from 1827-28. He died of cholera in July 1833. His grandfather Nathan Veatch fought in the American Revolution at the Battle of King's Mountain as a lieutenant of Tennessee Volunteers. His great-grandfather James Veatch fought, was wounded, and died of his wounds in the American Revolution at the Battle of Camden." (ref., Wikipedia.)"
