[47126] He is simply Smedley Elder on his son David's death cetificate. "Duncannon Record [Duncannon, PA], 6 April 1894," p. 2: "Smedley Elder died a heroic death at 9.20 o'clock last night. He had never done harm to anybody, even a worm, and the grim monster had no terrors for him. He was a Christian, also. He was in delicate health for some time. Rallying periodically, prostration would ensue. Last Saturday his physician frankly told him he could not get well. He replied: 'All is right; I am ready to go.' Yesterday he called his mother, wife and four children to his bedside, embraced them and said a tearless farewell. A neighbor and friend called to see him just as the evening of life was making room for the dawn of eternity. Smedley, so weak of body that he could hardly articulate, had strength enough to wave his hand and peace fully say: 'Over the river.' At one period of his life he was a follower of the romantic canal, the glory of which has forever departed, and among his dying expressions was a wish that he might hear the sound of a boat horn once more. Smedley was a son of the late James Elder and a decendent of one of the oldest families of Harrisburg. The funeral will be held at 2 o'clock to-morrow (Friday) aftornoon, at the house, Rev. William Dorwart officiating. The deceased was a member in good standing of the Odd Fellows and Jun ior Mechanics' Order, at Duncannon and according to his patriotic desires will be buried by the latter's rites, under the auspices of Newport Council, No. 614. - Newport News. The above from the Newport News will be interesting to our readers who knew Mr. Elder during his lifetime. He was a man of more than ordinary attainments and always looked on the bright side of everything. The Jr. O. U. A. M. and I. O. O. F. sent delegations to his funeral, six members of the former organization acting as pall bearers in accordance with an oft-expressed desire of Mr. Elder. A Record scribe was in attendance at the funeral. Mr. Elder had been sick all winter and had become so weak and poor that he was but a shadow of his former self at the time of his death. His remains were encased in a beautiful casket upon which was spread a large silk flag. In accordance with a desire expressed shortly before his death a badge of Montebello Council, No. 704, Jr. O. U. A. M. was worn upon the lapel of his coat. After services at the house by Rev. Dorwart the funeral cortege moved to Newport cemetery where the last sad rites were performed over the body of the deceased by the two orders to which he belonged and Rev. Dorwart. The members of Newport Council, No. 614, Jr. O. U. A. M. turned out in a body at his funeral to the number of seventy-two."
