A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Carlisle March 10, 1865, mustered into federal service there March 21 as a private with the second organization of Co. F, 101st Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company June 25, 1865. He married Caroline J. Saylor in 1872 and fathered Annie (b. @1872 - married a Carl), Cyrus Knight (b. 07/06/78), Howard C. (b. 03/21/81), Harry Edward (b. 10/31/86), Roy G. (b. 07/??/91), and Lulu Edith (b. 09/??/91). By 1890, he was living with his family in Saville Township, Perry County. He was the son of Frederick & Margaret Elizabeth (Houck) Harter." "The Perry County Democrat [New Bloomfield, Pennsylvania]," 24 January 1934, p. 3: "George W. Harter, former resident of Bloomfield, and Civil War veteran, died yesterday at the home of his son, Harry Harter, in Lemoyne.
