[nee Kenniston] Conner). His will is dated 27 Oct 1882. He m. (2) 5 Sept 1873 at Penobscot, ME Mrs. Purlina (Polina ?) Perkins of Bradley. Lucy Jane Webster wrote: "The second wife Polly, his diary shows his love and respect for her. They had been sick all summer during the heat and dry. She died and he, as ill as he was, made her coffin. He also took her coffin back to her family in Hermon, 1st by cart to Bucksport and then by train to Brewer and another horse cart. That would have been a long journey and sad when coming home."
He went to sea when Castine was a flourishing center of Grand Banks fishing, importing salt from Cadiz and Liverpool and distributing it to other towns. 500 vessels fitted out in Castine in 1850 ("Coastal Maine: A Maritime History," Roger F. Duncan [NY: Norton, 1992] p. 433). John's household as shown in the 1850 census includes Josiah Brown, a joiner, ae 48. For a detailed history of the area, see "Penobscot, Maine 1761-2011," Mark E.
