"The Oskaloosa Independent [Oskaloosa Kansas]," 23 November 1900 p. 5: "This community was much startled Wednesday afternoon by the report that Mr. Daniel Briner, one of the early settlers of Oskaloosa and a good, respected citizen, had been found dead in his barn at the eastern edge ot town. Mr. Briner had taken milk to the creamery in the morning and about 10 o'clock, after his return, was talking with a neighbor, Mr. Boles, and seemed in excellent health and spirits. He was about the place doing the chores but didn't come in to dinner, and finally, about 2 o'clock, Mrs. Briner became uneasy and went to look after him. and seeing his lifeless form lying in the entry way of the barn, ran to the house anh screamed anh rang a dinner-bell, which speedily brought neighbors to the scene and help from town was telephoned for. But Mr. Briner was past earthly help, and had probably been dead since about 12 o'clock noon. Such was the belief of Coroner McCreight, who was called, and who also thinks that apoplexy was the cause. No post mortem examination was held, but deceased was found lying on his face, with the pitch-fork in his hand, just as he fell, and the probability is that a blood vessel in the brain burst and that death was instant and painless. The three chldren who live in and near town were on the scene in a very short time, together with many sympathizing, friends, and all was done that could be done."
The Oskaloosa Independent, 7 December 1900," p. 4: "Daniel Briner was born in Tyrone township, Perry Co., Penn., April 19, 1823. Born of Lutheran parents, he was baptized in infancy in that faith. Left fatherless at nine years of age he was compelled from that time on to make his own way in the world. His opportunities for education were limited, but he was a great reader and in that way acquired a large fund of information. While a young man he removed from Pennsylvania to Ohio, where he remained for several years. He was married Dec. 27, 1849, to Amanda Griffith of Lebanon, Ohio. To them were born seven children, five of whom are still living. Soon after his marriage he and his young wife removed to Iowa and there endured the hardships of the pioneers of that new country. In June, 1857, he came with his family to Oskaloosa, Ks., and the old home where he remained until the day of his death, Nov. 21, 1900. He was above all things else a home man; having no home from childhood until he made one for himself, he found his greatest earthly happiness in his home and children, for whose interests he was always thinking aud planning."
