[56321] "The Ellsworth American [Ellsworth, Maine]," 7 May 2024: "Ellsworth - Ruth Mildred Blaisdell Silsby, wife of the late Herbert T. Silsby II and mother to Paula and Kathryn Silsby, passed away peacefully on May 1, 2024, in the home where she had lived for 63 years. She was surrounded by the loving hearts of her family. Born on Oct. 2, 1922, to Harvard and Marian (Page) Blaisdell, Ruth lived the majority of her 101+ years in Ellsworth. She graduated from Ellsworth High School in 1940 and the University of Maine, Class of 1944, where she was a member of the Gamma Chapter of Alpha Omicron Pi. The years of World War II were softened by the camaraderie and close friendships she made while at college, those bonds made even tighter by life in the darkness of war. Looking back, she was amazed at her humble part in the war effort as a surveillance lookout from the dome of Ellsworth City Hall. After graduation, spurred on by her college roommate, Ruth headed south for the winter. They drove down, sightseeing and visiting along the way, with no destination in mind. They eventually ended up in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., working at the Sea Ranch Resort. Those were carefree times. The crescendo of that youthful adventure was a trip to Havana, Cuba."
