He came to Missouri about 1810, and spent some time in St. Louis. served as Sec. of State 1813-18 to Gen. William Clarke when he was Governor of Missouri Territory at St. Charles, Mo. He volunteered as a Ranger during the War of 1812 and served for 2 years. He received a pension and was granted land in Pike Co., MO for his services. While in fort on the bank of Missouri River, Cape Gray, St. Charles, MO, 24 May 1814, he married Martha "Patsey" Gilbert,daughter of Samuel Gilbert, a wealthy planter, formerly of Russellville, KY, who moved to Saverton, MO. After peace was declared, William and Patsey moved to St. Louis County where they remained until 1818, then moving to Salt River Township, and settled on a tract of land near what is now Tompkins Station on Keokuk, St. Louis, & NW Railway. He erected a small loghouse in a dense forest. They opened out a farm and reared a family of six children. He was elected Justice of the Peace, holding the office for 20 years. Patsey was buried on the Gilbert Farm Graveyard near Saverton, Ralls Co. William was buried on the farm of his third son, Christopher Weeden Tompkins, now Droste Farm, Pike Co."
