[18614] Sarah, second wife of Ichabod Grindle, is daughter of Joseph Dow and Judith Butman who m. at Amesbury, MA 11 January 1731. See "The Book of Dow," R. P. Dow (1929). In 1845/46 an old lady named "Miss Ichabod" was living with Judith Grindle and is presumed to be her mother [ - "The Grindle Family of Hancock County, Maine" (1978), p. 17]. Ancestry.com offers: "Dow Name Meaning - Scottish (also found in Ireland): reduced form of McDow. This surname is borne by a sept of the Buchanans. English: variant of Daw. Americanized spelling of Dutch Douw, an Old Frisian personal name. Americanized spelling of German Dau."
