[52814] Find A Grave memorial 83867253 offers Barbara's obituary: "Barbara Adler, 100, died Nov. 17, 2011 at Sonogee Nursing Center in Bar Harbor after a brief illness. The daughter of James and Nellie Strout, Barbara was born April 19, 1911, in Milbridge. She graduated from Milbridge High School in 1929 as class valedictorian, and graduated from Gorham State Teachers College in 1931 with a degree in teaching. She taught school in her hometown of Milbridge, and worked summers as a waitress in Bar Harbor, where she met her future husband, Harry Adler, who owned a dress shop on Main Street. The two were married in 1937, following a courtship that included frequent dancing dates. Harry was an accomplished dancer and as a young man danced frequently in New York's famed ballrooms. He was fond of saying that Barbara was the best dancer he was ever paired with. For many years the Adlers operated Adler's Dress Shop on Cottage Street in Bar Harbor. A second store, the Town and Country Shop on Main Street, was opened in 1956. Barbara was active in the business until the 1980s, and enjoyed a full and happy retirement. A voracious reader, she was known for her generosity, her love for her children and grandchildren, her sharp wit, and her storytelling. She was also an accomplished pianist who played professionally for silent movies when she was young. She enjoyed playing the piano at Sonogee events up until a few months before her death, and entertained friends and relatives on the piano during a party to celebrate her 100th birthday at Sonogee in April. Barbara was a long-time member of the Bar Harbor Congregational Church. Mrs. Adler is survived by two sons, Gary and his wife Elizabeth of Mount Desert and Philip and his wife Gail of St. Louis, Mo.; a niece, Brenda Whitney of Waterville; seven grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband Harry in 1969; a son, James Paul, in 1964; a grandson, David, in 1979; and her brother Kenneth Strout."
