Virginia Horler notes:
In 1867 (correspondent B. Meyer) she traveled to California with her Aunt Mary who had come from California to get her. They traveled via the Isthmus of Panama. Aunt Mary, her father's sister, Mary Frances (Palmer) Pray Marston, who had married (second marriage for both) Phineas Frost Marston, and Phineas' children lived in the Fruitvale District in Oakland, California. "Ettie," (11) is listed in the 1870 Census with the Marston family in Oakland. (1870 Census Brooklyn Twp, Oakland, Alameda, CA, page 55) NOTE: Etta's 1930 Census record says she immigrated to the US in 1868.
The Marston home was a large and pleasant white house surrounded by several acres of oaks, pepper and fruit trees. A brook ran through the property, and Etta spent time reading while other children played. She had her own pony to ride. Etta remembered luncheons served on china and tea parties.
Etta attended Mills Seminary in Oakland for one year and then transferred to the San Francisco Normal School (later San Francisco State University) where she earned her teaching credential.
(Excerpt from Bonniegaia): "late 1870s--in his early 20s, Thomas F. Steere put son Henry in charge of a ranch he owned to the north of Bald Hills, Humboldt Co., in a little remote hamlet called Iaqua--John Steere Branches, [source almost definitely was Julia Steere Clarke-BGM] He wrote his father that a teacher was needed there. Thos. F. Steere arranged for a Miss Henrietta PALMER to take this challenge. She was paid $20 per month and given room and board. Her letters to an aunt back in Oakland have been preserved, discovered in an attic, and included in a booklet written by Julia (Steere) Clarke, the daughter of Henry who on Jan 25, 1883 married Henrietta in Oakland, CA. Her letters give an excellent description of the life and people in the Iaqua pioneer community. They also reveal the writer's intelligence, charm, and intense interest and concern for her pupils who were handicapped often by the physical, spiritual and emotional poverty of their parents and their surroundings.--Julia Steere Clarke
"Iaqua was the name of an Indian tribe near Eureka, CA, where Henretta went to teach after college. She was so fond of the place where she taught, and fell in love with Henry there, that she gave Tom the middle name of Iaqua.--Lora Woodhead Steere to Bonnie.
Iaqua Logging Camp--needed 4-wheel drive!--joked Thos Iaqua Steere, 1969 to Bonnie"
In July 2006 Bonnie G. Meyer transcribed the original letters 18-year old Henrietta wrote in 1879 to her aunt, Mary Frances (Palmer) Marston, who had raised her in East Oakland, California. In Bonnie's words, "The letters give insight to wilderness living, from the women's point of view. Here is a first-hand account of the lives of the less fortunate who lived on the fringes of civilization, through the eyes of a generally sympathetic young woman from Oakland, California, who, with the exception of her encounter with an Indian woman - - seemed to view her decidedly different surroundings with compassion (where warranted), good humor and an eye for detail."
Etta's excellent education is evident in her account of her experiences in this remote community in Humboldt County, California. She traveled first to Eureka by steamer (no roads connected Eureka to San Francisco) and then proceeded by horse and wagon deep into the woods. The community was spread out, and most of the men were "stock raisers." They all seemed quite poor, and most of the women worked from dawn to dusk. Their life was very different from the life Etta had known in Oakland. Etta's "luncheon" for the mothers of her students shows that the women had no experience with such things, but they all enjoyed themselves. Etta brought a "ray of sunshine" into the back woods.
The 1880 Census lists Etta Palmer (25) teaching school in Iaqua, an isolated settlement in Humboldt County. Her age and birthplace (Massachusetts) are erroneous. Her future husband, Henry Steere, lived with his parents in East Oakland in 1880, and Henry and Heniretta were married 25 January 1883 in the Marston's home in East Oakland, Alameda, California. Henrietta's sister, Annie Mary Palmer, had married Frank Marston in Oakland in 1873.
In the 1880's Etta taught at the Fruitvale School in Oakland.
In 1884 their first child, Thomas, was born in the Fruitvale District of Oakland at the Phineas Marston home.
In 1888-1890 Henry Steere is listed in the Los Angeles City Directory as a passenger agent for the Southern Pacific R.R.
1900 Census Los Angeles, Los Angeles, California ED 7 Page 226: Henry Steere, born Sept 1856, married 18 years, born in California, US Army officer; Henrietta, born Nov 1859 (hard to read) in New Brunswick, father born in Portland, Maine and mother born in Maine. Children included Thomas born Oct 1884, Ruth born Dec 1887, Edward born Apr 1889, John born June 1891 and Julia born Nov 1896, all in California. Note that Henrietta's mother was born in Portland, Maine and her father was born in Camden.
In 1900 Henry Steer is also listed with the 36th Infantry in the Phillipine Islands (Series T623, Film 1841, Book 1, page 49) in Lingayen, Pangasianan (sp?): Steere, Henry, Capt & QtrMr, born Sep 1856 (43) married 15 years, born California, father born Rhode Island, mother born New York.
In 1920 Henry Steere said he was married but was living alone in Brawley, Imperial County, California, age 63, working as an administration officer (for the Army). (ED 4 page 219). Daughter Julia (23) was single and worked as a teacher at the Tilton Seminary, a prep school in Belknap, New Hampshire (ED 15 page 221) She confirmed that her father was born in California and her mother in Canada.
In 1920 a son, Ed Steere (24) worked for the railroad in Robinson Springs, Camanche, Texas (ED 79 page 13B)
In 1928 Henry Steere, a veteran of the US Army with rank of Captain, died and was buried at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia. His widow, Henrietta P. Steere, was granted his pension. This is the only place that a "P" appears with Henrietta, which I assume refers to her maiden name of Palmer.
In 1930 Henrietta Steere (70) a widow was living with her unmarried niece, Sarah Louise Palmer, 636 Hillsborough St., Oakland, California. She stated that she was born in Canada and that she had immigrated to the US in 1868.
According to BonnieGaia's WorldConnect Tree v050728 (ancestry.com) Henrietta "Etta" lived in South Carolina in May 1939 and she died in Glendale, Ohio on 11 Feb 1950 aged 90 (NOTE: not sure about where she died, possibly in Gainesville, Florida). She is buried in Arlington National Cemetery with her husband. She married Henry Steere, married 25 Jan 1883 in Marston Home, East Oakland, Alameda, CA, b. 11 Sep 1856 in Alameda or San Francisco Co., California, (son of Thomas Frederick Steere and Julia Emma Conner) d. 4 Jun 1928 in Winchester, Frederick, VA, buried in Arlington National Cemetery Section 4-E Site 2844. In 1888 and 1890 Henry Steere is listed in the Los Angeles Directory working for the Southern Pacific R.R. as a passenger agent.
1898 - Outbreak of the Spanish-American War. Henry became an officeer in the California National Guard. This led to his recruiting his own outfit. (John Steere Family Branches)
"Upon the outbreak of the Spanish-American War (Henry) enlisted and was commissioned a captain of Battery D by Gov. Budd. Upon the close of the war the battery returned to San Francisco, but Capt. Steere remained and joined the 36th Regiment and was commissioned captain by President McKinley, and later became quartermaster of the regiment and distinguished himself according to the reports of Gen. McArthur. After the war he remained in government service and organized the revenue department of Manila, of which he is chief deputy. He is married, his wife being the former Etta Palmer, and they have three sons and two daughters, one attending the University of California: Thomas, Ruth, Ned, Jack and Julia H." (Guinn's HIstory of California and Biographical of Oakland, Vol. II, no date, presumed ca 1907, pps 482-3)
Henry joined the US Army on May 8, 1915 and was discharged on July 6, 1918. According to his pension record, he served as Captain Battery D, Cal Artillery and as Captain 36 USV Infantry. He is buried at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia.
