"Republican and Herald [Pottsville, PA], 9 May 1933," pp. 1 & 4: "Residents of Shenandoah were shocked today to learn of the death of Clara, widow of Dr. John S. Kistler, who died at 7 o'clock last night while On a visit to the home of her son. Dr. William Earl Kistler of 144 Park avenue, Swarthmore. Complications resulted in death. Mrs. Kistler, who since the death of her husband here, January, 12, 1929, resided with her daughter, Mrs. William Ressler, at Shamokin, left shortly before Easter, April 16, to visit her son at Swarthmore. She had been in ill health for some time, and about a week ago was stricken seriously. The body will be brought to Shenandoah Thursday morning. Undertaker Horace Anstock having left for Philadelphia to prepare the body for burial. Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the home of Elmer Wasley, Lloyd and West streets. Interment will be in the Odd Fellows cemetery. The late Mrs. Kistler was born at Cressona, being a daughter of the late Charles and Mary Dengler. The family removed to Shenandoah, Mrs. Kistler being a resident of Shenandoah practically all her life. Dr. Kistler preceded his wife in death over four years ago. He was an organizer and president of the Merchants' National Bank, an eminent physician, and identified with a number of business enterprises in the community. He and his wife resided at the corner of Jardln and Lloyd streets. Folloiring Dr. Kistler's death, his widow took up residence with her daughter, Mrs. William Ressler, at Shamokin. On numerous occasions she made return visits to Shenandoah. Mrs. Kistler was a graduate of the Shenandoah High school, and for a number of years was engaged as a teacher in the grade schools. She was a member of the Methodist Episcopal church, and Chapter 262, Order of Eastern Star. Countless local people will recall Mrs Kistler as a woman fortified with strong Christian character. Her philanthropies were many, and on occasions too numerous to relate, neighbors and friends benefitted by her charitable deeds. She was a woman of culture, her association being an influence for good in the circles in which she moved. Well read and active, she took a deep interest In the civic and business affairs of Shenandoah. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. William Ressler and Miss Ruth Kistler, Shamokin; three sons, Dr. Earl, Swarthmore; Dr. John, Pittsburgh; Dr. Harold, Ardmore; two sisters, Miss Anna Dengler, Northampton, Mass.; Mrs. William B. Wilson, Philadelphia; three brothers, Horace Dengler, of Bethlehem; Robert Dengler, of Shenandoah, secretary of the Citizens' Building and Loan Association, and Dr. Raymond Dengler, Allentown."
