[20576] John m. Mary Skiff (who d. at Sandwich, MA leaving nine children). Sprague's "Journal of Maine History." Volume 9 - July, August, September, 1921, page 130-131 gives information about Capt. Steven Smith and concludes: "Four of the ancestors of Capt. Stephen Smith, on his mother's side, came over in the Mayflower, viz: John Tilley and his wife Elizabeth, their daughter Elizabeth Tilley and John Howland. John Howland married Elizabeth Tilley soon after their arrival at Plymouth. Hope Howland, daughter of John and Elizabeth, and Elder John Chipman were married in 1646, and their grand-daughter, Bethia, daughter of Hon. John Chipman, married Samuel Smith and was the mother of Stephen Smith. Captain Smith died in Machias, September 29, 1806." "Chipman Family History," p. 491, in "Genealogies of Mayflower Families" on Family Tree Maker CD 171 reports a second wife (Elizabeth Handley, daughter of Capt. Thomas Handley and widow of Russell) and on p. 499 reports that John m. (3) the widow of Capt. Case, and that John r. Sandwich, MA where he was "Crowner or Coroner, a Capt. Lieutenant, and a Representative to the General Assembly at Boston . . . while he lived on the Vineyard he was Justice of the Peace and one of the Judges of the Inferior Court, etc. After he removed to Rhose Island Government, he was for some time the first of the Governors Council, and was also Chief Judge of the Superior Court or Court of Equity, as it was then called, and continued in said office until he was about 70 years old...." Compare the account of him in http://history.vineyard.net/dukes/b2chilres.htm: "This transient resident came in the early part of the 18th century from Sandwich. He was related by marriage Nathan Bassett, being a native of Barnstable, the son of Elder John and Hope (Howland) Chipman. He was born arch 3, 1669-70, and resided in Sandwich from 1691 to 1719, when he removed to Chilmark and staid a couple of years. Returning to Sandwich, he lived there from 1714 to 1720 and again settled here. He was a man of distinction, versed in legal knowledge which he exercised in a professional way, though calling himself a "cordwainer." [*Dukes Deeds, III, 93.] While here he was local agent for the Society for Propagating the Gospel. He removed to Newport, R. I., about 1727, soon acquired political prominence and became one of the Governor's assistants. He died in 1756, aged 86 years. He was thrice married, (1) to Mary Skiffe, (2) widow Elizabeth Russell and (3) to Miss Hookey of Rhode Island."

[51062] "The Bangor Daily News [Bangor, Maine]," 20 February 1908, p. 9: "The death of Arthur D. Hatch took place on Thursday, Feb. 13 at the home of bis mother, Mrs. Harriet C. Hatch, where he had been stopping this winter. Mr. Hatch had been in poor health for some time but the end was probably hastened by an attack of grip from which he had been suffering for a few days. His death, however, came suddenly and unexpectedly. His age was about 40 years. Beside his wife and aged mother, he leaves seven children who need a father's care. The funeral services were held at the home of his mother on Sunday and the interment was at West Surry."
