[6396] Another genealogy suggests (probably wrongly) that Nathaniel is son of Moses Chick (q.v.) and Lucy Pillsbury. He served in the Union Army as a Private in the 30th Infantry, 1863-64. For descendants, see "Amherst, Maine," Constance Hanscom Jellison (Bar Harbor Pub. Co., 1975). He m. (2) Mary Chatterly and had more children; this family with the 2nd wife were living in Clifton, ME in 1860.

Freeman died on Saturday evening at 7.30 o'clock at his residence on MAIN street, Freemansburg, aged sixty-eight years. The cause of death was dropsy, with which Dr. Freeman had been ailing for two years. A native of Easton, Dr. Freeman in his early boyhood moved with his parents, the late Dr. George W. and Matilda (Seip) Freeman, to Freemansburg, where he received his early school training. Later he entered Schwartz's Academy, Bethlehem, and then Lehigh University, which he left In his Sophomore year to enter the medical department of the University of Pennsylvania. After graduation from the latter institution with the class of 1873 he became associated with his father, who had a large practice in Freemansburg. Upon the death of his father In 1898 he retired from the medical profession to give his time and attention to his many other business interests. Dr. Freeman was formerly chief burgess of the borough of Freemansburg, and at other times served in the town council and school board. He was a member of Trinity Reformed Church, of which he was treasurer for many years and many times proved himself a benefactor to the congregation. He was married on May 24, 1877, to Emily J., daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Knecht, of Shimersville. He leaves his widow, one daughter, Mrs. Robert S. Mueller, of Baltimore, Md., two grandchildren and a brother, Dr. Walter S. Freeman, of Philadelphia." [4954] The 1880 census shows Lester in his parents' home age 9. "Bellville Messenger," 19 January 1906, Vol. 13, No. 51 reported: "L.W. Paullin, a former resident of Butler, who conducted a dentist office here a few years ago, died at Mansfield last Thursday, aged 34 years. The funeral was conducted at St. John's Saturday at 10:30, by Rev. S .P. Keifer, of Perrysville." Lester was a boarder in the home of Flyde E. Wise in Worthington, Richland Co., OH at the time of the 1900 census and was then a dentist; the 1894 Mansfield City Directory shows him r. with father at 407 N. Main St. and states Lester is a clerk at "Myers Sisters".
[20031] A. F. Bridges wrote to D. E. Piper 24 Nov 1911 that Susan's parents probably emigrated from Surrey Co., NC "along with hundreds of Quaker families, who were so numerous as to organize the Western Yearly Meeting which is still in Plainfield." Bridges also reports that the pastor of Salem Methodist Church when it was chartered in 1829 was Joseph Tarkington, father-in-law of Lt. Gov. Will Cumback and grandfather of Booth Tarkington, the author. He states that George and Susan r. briefly in IL but returned to IN, 4 miles SE of Poland. IGI (not verified) lists Susanna Staley, b. 17 March 1804 in Randolph Co., NC to Conrad Staley and wife Catherine Smith as the only "Susan Staley" born in NC between 1780 and 1820. Ancestral File (of the Mormon Church - not verified) reports that Conrad (married to Catherine Smith in 1800 in Guilford Co., NC) is son of Martin Staley (b. ca. 1747 in Germany, d. 31 March 1817 in Randolph Co., NC) and wife Charity Moretz (b. ca. 1750 in Germany, d. 5 April 1817 in Randolph Co., NC, m. ca. 1777). A Conrad Staley is on the 1815 tax list in Randolph Co., NC with 636 acres located in "Stinking Quarters", the NE corner of the county, north of Liberty and in present-day Liberty Twp. A Conrood [sic] Staley is on the 1799 tax list with 136 acres. A Conroad Staley is a signer of the 1773 petition to relocate the Guilford Co. Court House closer to the southern section of the county - this section became Randolph Co. six years later. The old former Richland Lutheran Church cemetery along state route 2418 about four miles north of Liberty contains many Staley graves, some from the early 19th century.
