[820] See the 1552 Heralds Visitation pedigree of Carr of Hetton, which makes it clear that Margaret was the mother of most of his children, 3 sons and 5 daughters; that after M's death c.1545 he married Isabel d/o Humphrey Carr by whom he had a son and a daughter; and around 1548-9 he married as his third wife, Ursula née Buckton, widow of John Collingwood of Eslington, Robert's son and heir. After John Carr's death - I have heard he was murdered, but have mislaid the ref - Ursula remarried to Henry Brandling of Newcastle, a leading merchant and official of that city. Ursula died 1593 and an abstract of her will exists. John and Margaret's eldest son, Thomas, won the heart of Elizabeth, grandaughter and heiress of Sir William Heron of Ford, and they married, to the consternation of the rest of the Herons, who had been expecting her to marry one of them, and so keep Ford and its lands in the family. They dreamt up a false story of an entail, and set about chucking the Carr family out of Ford. There was an armed clash which led to a feud lasting quite a few years. Thomas was murdered in 1558, and his son William died early from his exertions in challenging the Heron claim. The thing got woven into the politics of the restoration of the Percy family, and, since the Carrs were Catholics, into the religious divisions of the County gentry, who were split on both issues. The Privy Council and the Star Chamber were involved, so the thing assumed a national importance. I expect your interest in the Carrs came via the Forsters, since Sir William Heron's wife was a Margaret Forster if I remember right. There is a useful article about this feud by a lady called Meikle that I can give you the ref of if this would help you. Let me know if you want any more detail. - John Sanders (sand@bayview.romgroup.co.uk) via Internet, 1/98

[5329] http://www.bartleby.com/65/wo/WoodvilE.html states: "Woodville, Elizabeth - 1437-92, queen consort of Edward IV of England. She was the daughter of Richard Woodville (later the 1st Earl Rivers). Her first husband, Sir John Grey, was killed fighting on the Lancastrian side at the battle of St. Albans (1461) in the Wars of the Roses. By him she had two sons, Thomas, 1st marquess of Dorset, and Richard. Edward IV married her in secret in 1464, partly because the powerful Richard Neville, earl of Warwick, had other marriage plans for him and partly because of Elizabeths Lancastrian connections. The marriage was soon made public, however, and Elizabeths large family received numerous royal favors. At the death (1483) of Edward IV, Richard, duke of Gloucester (later Richard III), seized custody of the young Edward V, Elizabeths eldest son by the late king, and destroyed the power of the Woodvilles (Elizabeths brother the 2d Earl Rivers and son Richard Grey were executed). The queen mother again took sanctuary in Westminster and soon surrendered her second son by Edward, Richard, duke of York, to Gloucester. He then placed both boys in the Tower of London and declared them illegitimate, asserting that Elizabeths marriage to Edward was voided by a precontract of marriage on Edwards part. (The boys were subsequently murdered.) After Henry VII seized the throne from Richard, he married (1486) Elizabeths eldest daughter, who was also named Elizabeth."
