A favourite of King Stephen who gave him the castle and barony of Bedford in 1138, thereby creating him Earl of Bedford. He was ejected from Bedford by the sons of Robert Beauchamp. He appears to have lapsed into poverty and was probably degraded from his peerage. - m --- de Beauchamp, daughter of Simon de Beauchamp . . . ."
