Mary was age 89 at her death. Some say she was of Native American blood. She m. (2) 6 May 1746 Ebenezer Hall, r. Matinicus Island; she m. (3) Chipman Cobb, father of her son-in-law, ID1076.
Ebenezer Hall was massacred by Native Americans in 1757, and the island history continues "his wife and children carried off after he persisted in burning over the nearby Green Islands to improve the hay, despite several formal protests by Indians who collected birds' eggs and grass on these islands." Apparently he took over an island claimed by the Native Americans, and then killed two of them who attempted to land there. Perhaps Mary was spared because she was of Native American blood. After her husband was shot in the head, Mary opened the door of their fortified house and asked for quarter; the Native Americans thereupon rifled the house and burned it. They then took her with her children, Sarah Green, Peter Hall, Phebe Hall and Tabitha Hall (an infant), and Benjamin Morgrage. Her son Joseph Green escaped capture, used a canoe to reach a passing schooner whose crew came ashore and buried Ebenezer Hall, and then took Joseph to Falmouth, ME where he remaining brothers and sisters resided. The Native Americans were apparently irritated by the cries of the younger children and separated them from Mary; she never saw the four children again, nor Benjamin Morgrage. They may have been sold into French homes and raised in Quebec.
Mary was marched from the Maine coast to Quebec City. A fellow prisoner, Capt. Andrew Watkins, ransomed her for 213 Livr, 15 sols - this enabled her to leave on a ship for England, where she took the next ship for New York, thence to Boston, then by foot to Falmouth. Mary arrived at the home of her daughter, Hannah Cobb, in September, 1758, after an absence of fifteen months. She at once sent in the names of her four children and of Benjamin Morgrage to the secretary's office and appears to have spent the rest of her days trying to locate them or discover their fates. In 1760, on petition of Mary and of Jane, widow of Andrew Watkins, the MA General Court reimbursed Jane for Mary's ransom.
Ebenezer Hall was probably born by 1710 when his father moved to Maine; r. first at Back Cove, then in 1737 at Small Point, and in 1744 was at Pemaquid - propably as a seaman and fisherman. His first wife was Hannah ____ and they had at least: Mary (15 Apr 1730, m. Elijah Moody), Susannah (11 Aug 1732, m. 1760 William Proctor), Ebenezer (bapt. 1734, m. Susannah Young) and Hannah (m. 20 Apr 1766 Peltiah Allen, r. Windham, ME). His first wife died one day after young Hannah's birth. and Ebenezer employed Mary (Bloom) Green to care for the child - they married (published 9 May 1746 at Georgetown) and in 1749-50 moved to Matinicus Island where he was killed 10 June 1757.

Mary (Bloom) Halls experience on the island of Matinicus is a chilling tale. Her second husband, Ebenezer Hall (c. 1710-1757), was the first white settler to consider himself by 1750 as the "owner" of the island, in the English sense of land ownership, even though the Pennobscot Indians had long used the island to hunt for fish, eggs, birds, and seals. Ebenezer, as with most of the white English pushing out the Indians, had a radically different perception about land use versus ownership. He did not have a good relationship with them, provoking a variety of compaints from the Indians to the English government to remove him. At one point he and his son reputedly even kill two Indians who came onto the island and buried their dead bodies to conceal the deed from their tribespeople. He burned the grass on nearby Green Island several years, to improve grazing for his cattle, despite further protests about the damage it did to other natural food supplies the Indians depended on.
So it must not have come as a surprise to Mary when a dozen or so Indians came to the island in June of 1757 and surrounded the house while her husband was in Portland and her step-son at sea. The day after Ebenezer, Sr., returned, however, the Indians attacked the house. Mary and her twelve-year-old son from a previous marriage, Joseph Green, helped fend off the attack for several days. Ebenezer claimed to have shot and killed at least one of the Indians while they attacked with fire and gunfire. Eventually, one of their bullets found its mark and Hall was killed instantly with a shot through the head. Joseph managed to escape, but his mother and four other children were taken captive, and his dead step-father was scalped and his body left in the rubble. Joseph flagged down a passing ship with the red flannel lining of his jacket and was brought to the mainland.
The Indians took Mary and the four children up the Penobscot River as far as what is now Bangor, where she was separated from the children, whom she never saw again. From there, she was marched through the wildreness to Quebec. Her 215-pound ransom was eventually paid by Capt. Andrew Watkins, and she was able to sail to England, then back to New York, and then she amazingly walked most of the way back to Falmouth, Maine in December 1758, eighteen months after the attack. Although she rarried, she never saw her children again.

The Petition of Mary Hall resident at Falmouth in the County of York humbly sheweth -- That in the Month of June 1757 the Indians beset the House where her Husband and She lived at a place called Mintinicus in the County of York which he resolutely defended for Several Days but on the Tenth Day of said Month her Husband was killed, the House broken up & rifled, your Petitioner and four children carried away Captives, first to Penobscot where She was Separated from her Children and has not seen nor heard any Thing of them Since; from Penobscot your Petitioner was carried to Quebeck where ng tarried some time, She interceded with one Capt. Andrew Watkins a New England Gent then a Prisoner there to pay her Ransom, which he did, to the best remembrance Two Hundred and about Fifteen Livres, then She took Passage for England, from thence to New York & and thence to this Place having in ye who been absent about Eighteen Months & having undergone great Hardship during sd time.
Your Petitioner is now called upon by the Widow of said Wm Watkins for her Random Money, and having nothing to pay It with, nor any where to put her Head, nor any Thing to Subsist on Humbly beseeches the Compassion of your Excellency & Honours, that said Ransom Money may be paid by the Province, and your Petitioner also granted such further Relief as to your known Wisdom & Goodness shall seem meet - And as in Duty bound will ever pray - Mary Hall

[49138] "Dr. Samuel Schoppee Silsby, 57, prominent Bangor orthopedic surgeon, died Sunday morning at a local hospital of a coronary occlusion following a week's illness. Dr. Silsby was born in Aurora October 18, 1898, the son of Herbert Trafton Silsby and Margaret (Schoppee) Silsby. He was graduated from Bangor High school in 1919 and attended the University of Maine and was graduated from McGill University, Montreal, Canada, in the class of 1926 with a MDCM degree. Dr. Silsby, a member of the staff of the Eastern Maine General Hospital, has practiced medicine and orthopedic surgery in Bangor for 30 years. He was a member of the American College of surgeons, the American Medical Association, the Maine Medical Association, the Penobscot Association of which he was a past president, and the Boston Orthopedic Club. He was a surgeon of the Reserve of the United States Public Health Service. From 1942 to 1945 he was an instructor in Military Postgraduate Medical Courses at Dow AFB. He was also a member of Lygonia Lodge, F. and A. M., of Ellsworth, Phi Kappa Sigma Fraternity at the University of Maine, and Nu Sigma Nu Fraternity at McGill. He is survived by his wife, the former Ella Mae Shorey of Enfield; by five sons, Samuel S. Silsby, Jr., James Allan Silsby, David Shorey Silsby, Carl Trafton Silsby and Paul Steven Silsby, all of Bangor; by two brothers, William Sands Silsby of Ellsworth and Dr. Charles Selden Silsby of Bangor; and by three sisters, Mrs. Adelbert E. Bridges and Mrs. Leslie F. Burrill of Bangor, and Miss Alice Silsby of Aurora. Two grandchildren also survive."

"Bangor Daily News [Bangor, Maine], 21 November 2021': "Beals - The Reverend George L. Woodward, 86, went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on November 19, 2021, at Down East Community Hospital, surrounded by his loving family. George was born in Jonesport on July 23, 1935, the son of Lloyd and Iona (Beal) Woodward. Fondly known to all as Pastor George, he served in the ministry for 57 years until his retirement, pastoring congregations from Maine to Florida, finally settling back at home on Beals Island in 1996. Though his pastoral service began in 1958, he had felt his calling twenty years earlier, practicing his childlike faith by baptizing rocks in Barney Cove and preaching from the pages of the Watkins catalog. Pastor George attended Emmanuel Bible College in New Brunswick, Canada, completing his pastoral studies in 1954. After working for a number of years as a licensed furrier with Jerry Pooler Furs in Augusta, George stepped out in faith and began his ministry in those early years, in service to funeral homes. Pastor George's personal relationship with Jesus Christ was the touchstone of his life and of his extraordinary, expansive ministry. Ordained October 13, 1967, Pastor George was humbled and honored to have been pastor of Beals Advent Christian Church, his and his family's 'home church,' twice in his career. In the early 1970s, Pastor George led a weekly television ministry, 'The Back to Church Hour with Reverend George Woodward.' Recorded in Bangor during years he was pastor at Beals Advent Christian Church, and sponsored by Bert Look of Jonesport, the program featured guests from amongst his countless church friends throughout its run. Other honors of Pastor George's ministry included serving as president of Lakeside Advent Christian Campground, accepting many appointments to special ministry at Alton Bay, blessing the fleet of Wreaths Across America, and helping to coordinate the Christmas time outreach of the Maine Seacoast Mission. Pastor George committed his heart to the passionate plea of Christ: 'Feed my lambs.' His wedding services, funerals, baby dedications, baptisms, pastoral care visits, cards, and phone calls would be far too many to number. Pastor George will be greatly missed by his loving wife of 67 years, Iris Joy (Hersey) Woodward; and their large, devoted family. In addition to Iris, surviving him are their children, Wanda Alley and husband, Ronnie, of Jonesport, Kevin Woodward and wife, Billie Jo, of Hampden, Patti Kelley and husband, Ernest Jr., of Jonesport, and Kris Woodward and wife, Diane, of Richmond, VA; their grandchildren, Nate Alley and wife, Christy, Kadi Merchant and companion, Jeff Jordan, Andrew Woodward and wife, Linda, Leigh Alley and husband, Anson, Lauren McCoy and husband, Scott, Rosie Conary, William Quinn, Lucas Boobar and wife, Katie, Patrick Kelley and wife, Misty, Ira Kelley and wife, Kathy, Kyle Mallory-Macdonald and fiancée, Kelsey Briggs, and Kameron Woodward; and their great-grandchildren, Hailey Wood, Tyler Wood, Anderson Alley, Layla Merchant, Nathan Alley, Brenna Alley, Jordan McCoy, Hailee McCoy, Jaxon McCoy, Sylis Boobar, Anson Kelley, Bradley Kelley, Cedric Mallory-Macdonald, and Wynn Mallory-Macdonald. Pastor George also leaves his beloved brothers, Vernon Woodward, James Woodward and wife, Doris, and Lloyd Woodward Jr. and wife, Alice; and special nieces and nephew, Crista Wallace and husband, AJ, Marc Woodward and wife, Dee, and Laura Woodward and fiancé, Ryan Beal. Pastor George also is survived by a special aunt, Ina Alley, who was his childhood best friend; and many other special nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and colleagues.
Pastor George was predeceased by his infant twin sons, Rickey Newell Woodward and Rodney Nolan Woodward, who returned to the arms of their Savior in 1959; and a dear sister-in-law, Blanche Woodward."
