He served as master of many vessels which sailed out of Ellsworth. Among his commands were the Ann Stuart, L. D. Remick, Emily and Gold Hunter.
His first wife was Hannah Ann Duffy (alternate spelling Duffie). They married in Blue Hill on November 22, 1873. David and Hannah had the following children: Fannie, twins Albert E and Grace A., second set of twins Flora and Nora, and third set of twins Hartley and Raymond. Hannah Ann Duffy Closson died in 1887 shortly after the third set of twins were born. David's and his second wife Cora (nee Mosley) were married July 3, 1890. David and Cora had seven children: Freeman Nelson, Irving L, Eva Augusta, Guy F., Frances L, David Lewis, and Cecil Harry."

Death was attributed to a heart attack. Born on March 24, 1910, in Amberson, he was a son of the late Albert A. and Orpha Piper Culbertson. Mr. Culbertson was a member of the Amberson Presbyterian Church and an employe of Letterkenny Army Depot. He was a veteran of World War II, having served with the 7th Army in Africa, France, and Central Europe. He was a member of the McCartney Post, No. 232, American Legion, at Dry Run. Mr. Culbertson is survived by a sister, Mrs. Margaret Eckenrode, Shippensburg, and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the John L. Agett funeral home, Dry Run, with the Rev. Charles F. Tolbert officiating. Military rites will be conducted by the McCartney American Legion Post. Burial will be made in Amberson Cemetery."
