[13755] He was known as Stanley. "Shamokin News-Dispatch [Shamokin, PA], 27 November 1953," p. 1: "An illness that dated back more than seven months ended in death at 5:45 Wednesday afternoon for R. Stanley Seiler, church organist, business man and widely known citizen, at his home, 28 West Lincoln Street. Mr. Seiler had been in seemingly good health until last April when he was stricken suddenly ill. He failed to respond to medical treatment and In May entered Jefferson Hospital, Philadelphia, where he subsequently submitted to a serious operation, performed by the noted Dr. Kenneth Pry. He regained his strength sufficiently to return home in June, but was unable to resume his accustomed business and social activities. He had been invalided for the most time since then at his cottage on Hoover's Island and in his home on West Lincoln Street. A week ago his condition took an especially serious turn and he failed steadily until the end came Wednesday. Robert Stanley Seiler was born in Shamokin August 27, 1891, and had been a life long resident of the community. His father was the late Daniel G. Seiler, a pioneer settler of Shamokin and who for many years operated a successful wholesale produce business here. His mother was Jemima (Weicksel) Seiler. He attended Shamokln public schools, entered Shamokin High School in 1905 and was graduated from that institution four years later with top honors in his class. Upon his graduation he received a scholarship to Colgate University, but illness overtook him and he was unable to avail himself of the educational opportunity. Later he pursued studies at a business school in Lancaster and upon his return here was associated with various business enterprises until 1918 when he entered the employ of the J. H. & C. K. Eagle Silk Manufacturing Company. In 1921 Mr. Seiler became assoclated with his brother, Walter Seiler, in the operation of the Empire Vulcanizing Company, local agents for Firestone Tire Company, and had continued in the position of business manager for the firm until the time of his fatal illness. From early youth Mr. Seiler displayed a rare talent for music and was gifted as a pianist, organist and instrumentalist. He was quick to master the pipe organ and at the of 15 accepted the post of organist at Trinity Lutheran Chuch on East Sunbury Street, succeeding his brother, the late Herbert Seiler. In March of 1924 he transferred to St. John Reformed Church, Eighth Street, as organist, and continued in that capacity until stricken ill last April. Several years ago Mr. Seiler took on the duties of choir director as well as organist and thereafter directed St. John choir in the presentation of many notable cantatas end oratories. These programs were of unusually high order and attracted music lovers from many areas. Mr. Seiler was affiliated for many years with 'Our Band' during the period when it was sponsored by the J. H. & C. K. Eagle Company. His brother, Walter Seiler, was a longtime director of the band, having retired from that post a number of years ago. At one time the four Seiler brothers were members of the band, Walter, Victor, Herbert and R. Stanley. Fraternally, Mr. Seiler was a member of Lodge 255, Free and Accepted Masons and the Temple Club. He was also a member of St. John Reformed Church. He is survived by his widow, the former Miss Erma Zanker, two brothers, Walter and Victor, and one sister, Mrs. Alma Greenman, all of Shamokin."
