Richard came to Scituate, Mass. via the Barbados in 1630 and soon moved to Lynn, MA. In 1637 he was one of about 50 persons who left Lynn to settle Sandwich. He was one of the first two Deputies to the General Court [i.e. local legislature], 1639, and served for 14 years. He was a member of the Council of War, 1675. He was one of three appointed to purchase land from the Native Americans for Yarmouth. He had brought a lot of cash with him from England. At his own expense he purchased 16 square miles for a permanent abode for the Mashpee Indians - this tract has been an Indian reservation since then. He learned their language, and was a missionary among them. He was ordained a pastor by John Cotton, Jr. and John Eliot in 1647, probably the first Englishman ordained to serve a Native American congregation in colonial America. He translated the Lord's Prayer into the Native American language - copies are available at the Aptucxet Trading Post near Bourne. In 1919 Native Americans were still living on the land given them by Richard. His work was so successful that one of the Native Americans (Simon Popmonet, first Native American ordained in New England) succeeded him as pastor; Richard's great-grandson, Joseph Bourne, was next pastor in 1725. "He [Richard] controlled them by his just and Christian behavior and did more by the moral he exerted than Bradford at the head of his army." He was one of the most useful and prominent citizens of Sandwich. He is buried on his own land near his house. {- Hannah S. B. She died on 4 Oct 1713 in Sandwich, Mass. Ruth - first husband was Jonathan Winslow, Richard was second, married Elder John Chipman of Sandwich after Richard died. Rev. Richard - buried near his home on left side of Dock Lane. Came to Plymouth Mass about 1635. His ancestry traces back to Sir John Bourne, Secy of State to Queen Mary (1553-1558). This is known because of the "chervon party per pale" in the Bourne Coat of Arms. Richard, aged 24, left England, coming by way of St. Kitts & Barbados, arriving in America Jan 1, 1634/5. He stayed with his brother Henry in Scituate Mass. Richard was one of the earliest settlers of Shawmee, Mass, later incorporated in 1637 as Sandwich, Mass. (Part of Sandwich became Bourne, Mass. in 1884) Richard Bourne had many interests but his work with the Indians is probably the most outstanding. The continued peace with the Indians was due more to his efforts than to the military forces. He learned the Indian language and began his work about 1658."
He was ordained pastor of the Indian Church at Mashpee in 1670. Richard purchased at his own expense 16 square miles as a permanent home for the Mashpee Indians. He translated the Lords Prayer into the Indian language - copies are available at the Aptucxet Trading Post near Bourne. In 1919 Indians were still living on the land given them by Richard.

"The Bangor Daily News [Bangor, Maine]," 15 Jul y 1989, p. 10: "Fred Joseph Bowden, Sr., 89, died July 14, 1989 in Bucksport at the home of his son, Carroll, with whom he had resided for the last year. He was born in Orrington June 19, 1900, the son of Fred and Clara (Billington) Bowden. Mr. Bowden had done farming in Orrington and Monroe and later worked as a horse trader and then as a meat cutter. He also worked with his son at Fred Bowden Sales and Service of Orrington. Surviving are three sons, James Bowden of Santa Maria, Calif., Fred Bowden, Jr. of Orrington and Carroll Bowden of Bucksport. Two daughters, Marilyn Blood of Orland and Clara Rolerson of Morrill; 23 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren one great-great-grandson, several nieces, nephews and cousins. Mr, Bowden was predeceased by a daughter, Ernestine Ames; and three wives, Joyce, Florence and Nettie."
