under his grandson, St. Cyllin}. The Silures "were a powerful and warlike
tribe in ancient Britain, occupying approximately the counties of Monmouth,
Brecon and Glamorgan. They made a fierce resistance to the Roman conquest
about A.D.48...their town Venta Silurum (Caerwent, 6 mi. W. of Chepstow)
became romanized. Its massive Roman walls survive, and excavations have
revealed a town hall and market square, a temple, baths, amphitheatre,
etc." {Encyclopaedia Britannia, 1956 Ed., 20:679}.
