[19502] "Angola Herald [Angola, Indiana], 25 March 1953," p. 1: "Oscar J. Arnold, 79, of Lake George, was killed instantly as his car went out of control at the west side of Fremont and crashed into a tree Monday forenoon. Officers who investigated the accident said that Arnold started to go around a light pick-up truck driven by Billy Carpenter, of Angola. Carpenter, who is 26 years old, started to make a left turn at the Toledo and Broad street intersection in Fremont, just as Arnold started to go around the truck. The auto hit the left front fender of the truck and Arnold lost control of his car, which careened into a tree. Arnold suffered a crushed chest from the steering wheel which caused his death. Steuben county Sheriff Ray Gilbert and his deputy, Harry Dirrim investigated the accident. Surviving Mr. Arnold are a sister, Miss Amy Arnold, of Lake George, and a brother, William Arnold, of West Unity, Ohio. The body was taken to the Beams Funeral Home in Fremont, where funeral services will be held on Thursday, March 26, at 1:00 o'clock. The Rev. Victor Roebuck, of Bryan, Ohio, will officiate at the funeral service and burial will be in the Fountain Grove cemetery at Bryan."

[20272] Zachariah m. (1) 16 Dec 1858 Margaretta Bovard Clark (b. 1814) and (2) 18 Feb 1874 Susan Wingert Shelly (d. 1905). "History of the Susquehanna & Juniata Valleys" (1886), pp. 429-30: "Probably the most noted stage route in this territory, if not in this State, was that opened in 1853 by Zachariah Rice....No stage-lines were in operation in Perry County, and all the mails for the interior were carried by post-riders. In that year he established a daily stage and mail route from Landisburg, through Loysville, Green Park and Bloomfield, to Newport, and a tri-weekly stage to Germantown; the latter in 1856 was make a daily line. Soon after this, lines were established by Major Alexander Barnes from Ickesburg to Newport and from Ickesburg to Millerstown, which were purchased in 1863 by Zachariah Rice, who continued in the management of the various lines until his death, in 1880. His sons - Samuel, Jesse, William, James, Henry, Zachariah and Joseph - each became drivers on the various routes, and succeeded to the business upon the death of their father. At present (1885) the lines from Landisburg and New Germantown to Newport are owned and conducted by Zachariah and Joseph Rice, the route from Landisburg to Carlisle by Henry Rice and that from Ickesburg to Newport and Millerstown by Samuel Rice."

[8690] "The Perry County Times, 23 September 1926," p. 5: "William Ritter, son of David Susan McClade Reapsome Ritter, suddenly at his home near Loysville Saturday about, 10 a. in., aged 33 years, 5 months and 23 days. Mr. Ritter had suffered a sun stroke several years ago, but had apparently recovered when his health begun to fail about a year ago, gradually sapping his strength. His sudden death is a terrible shock to his family and friends. He was a hard working, industrious young man, who was a farmer, living on the old Ritter homestead, his father's farm, and where he was born and raised. The success of the farm was largely to his credit, even before his parents' removal to a nearby home some years ago. A faithful son to his parents, his mother's standby, energetic and capable since boy hood, assuming the most of the labor of hauling lumber, etc., for the house and barn his parents built in recent years, He has also always been a kind, faithful, loving husband, father and brother, respected and honored by many. He was a member of the Loysville Lutheran Church, serving as deacon at one time, Mr. Ritter was married to Miss Edith Barnes, of Donnally Mills, in January, 1918 by the Rev. A. R. Longanecker, then pastor of the Loysville Lutheran charge. His wife, with four daughters, born to them, survive, namely: Janet, 7, Lenore and Larue, twins, 5 and Sara Louise, 1 year old. Also surviving are his parents and the following sisters and brother: Annie, of Harrisburg; Margaret, Mrs. Charles Smith, of Blain ; Sara, Mrs. .lames Bowers, of Mifflin, and Paul, at home."
