[3969] Called "Wake-dog". See "England Under the Angevin Kings," Kate Norgate (N.Y., N.Y.: Haskel House, 1969), Vol. 1, pp. 253-56. See http://fjaunais.free.fr/h0maine.htm which reports: "Herbert 1er Eveillechien, comte du Maine (vers 984 - 13/4/1036)" and states he is father of Paule of Maine, Hugues du Maine and Gersende du Maine; and reports he is son of "Hugues III du Maine, comte du Maine (vers 960 - vers 1015 )" who is son of "Hugues III du Maine, comte du Maine (vers 960 - vers 1015 )." http://home.eckerd.edu/~oberhot/feud-maine.htm offers: "Information about Maine is not thick on the ground. Latouche indicates that simultaneously to the existence of royal 'ducs' of Maine, there were also local counts. The title of count was held in the first half of the IX century by one Rorgon. Loosely between 861 and 878 is was held by his son Geoffroi. His loyalty apparently wavered but he was pardoned by Charles the Bald in 863 and joined Charles in the fight against the Norman invasions. It is murky, but it appears that this line ended after 878 and by 895 passed to another house. Latouche suggests two different people, Berenger (12) and Roger (14) appeared next (or sequnetially?). To give an indication of the confusion that exists, Poey d'Avant (1:210) notes that Hugh the Grand, duc of France, established Hugues I, son of David, as count of Maine in 965. This is after a break in a series of 9th century rulers. His listing of the counts of Maine gives Hugues Is reign as from 955 to 1015, (yes - 955) when he is succeeded by Herbert I. The Grand Larousse Encyclopedia also notes 955 as the start of a reign, but does not identify whose or a date of death. Latouche suggests that this record needs rectification. Given that Latouche writes after Poey d'Avant and offers a fuller and more documented history, I'll follow him. Records of Roger come from the accounts of the bishop of Mans, whose lands were ravaged by Roger. The bishop excommunicated him for this bad behavior. Roger ruled until about 929 - 931 and was succeeded by his son (Hugues I) who ruled about 25 years. He, in turn, was succeeded by his son Hugues II, who assumed the title about 955. Latouche suggests that the lineage the Poey d'Avant cites is legendary, or "fabuleuse." http://www.fordham.edu/halsall/source/1081gestaarnaldi.html offers: "The last direct representative of the comital dynasty of Maine, Herbert II, died in 1061. Duke William of Normandy had betrothed his son, Robert, to the daughter of Herbert. Even though she died before 1061, William insisted that the betrothal to his son gave him the right to rule Maine. In 1063, then, William invaded Maine and set up Robert as Count of Maine. To ensure this, William placed Norman garrisons in Le Mans and in the important castles of the county." Stephen and Mercy r. Orland, ME at the time of their marriage. They had 16 children, listed in "Hugh Hutchins of Old England" (Baltimore: Gateway Press, 1984), p. 726. William Colehour (www.colehour.com ) reports: "He was an ordained minister of the Methodist Church. Three of his sons also followed this calling. Stephen and his wife, Mercy Hutchings, were double first cousins, both sharing descent from Charles Hutchings, Mary Perkins, Daniel Wardwell and Mercy ____ . He was performing marriages and was the town clerk of Penobscot during the period from 1831-1850. The last marriage he performed was on 2 November 1850. Stephen was buried at Hillside Cemetery in North Penobscot, Hancock Co, ME on the corner of routes 15 and 199, across from the church. Stephen was listed in the 1820 census at Penobscot, Hancock Co, ME with two males under age 10, one male age 16-26 and one female age 16-26. There was one member engaged in agriculture and one in commerce. Stephen was listed in the 1830 census at Penobscot with one male under age 5, one male age 10-15, one male age 10-15, one male age 30-40, one female under age 5, two females age 5-10 and one female age 30-40. He was listed in the 1840 census at Penobscot with three males age 5-10, one male age 10-15, one male age 15-20, one male age 40-50, two females under age 5, one female age 10-15, two females age 15-20 and one female age 40-50. Stephen was listed as age 54 in the 1850 census for Penobscot as a farmer with $600 of real estate."
"Zion's Herald and Wesleyan Journal" for 14 May 1851 reports "Rev. Stephen Wardwell died in Penobscot, March 25, in his 56th year. He experienced the saving grace of God about thirty-one years since, and was received into the M. E. Church under the faithful labors of Rev. John S. Ayer, and having put his hand to the plough he never looked back, but continued 'steadfast, unmovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord.' In 1822 he was licensed to preach, and his brethren counting him worthy he was subsequently ordained Deacon and Elder. He was sound in all the great doctrines of salvation through Christ, and was well able to explain and enforce them, and few men ever lived and labored so long and acceptably in one place as he did. In 1842 one of our young men went up from his work, and by the urgent request of his Presiding Elder, (though hardly recovered from a fever which brought him near death's door) he went to the circuit, but he had a year of hard labor, weariness and pain. At the end of the year he returned to his family entirely broken down, and has preached but few times since. But the hallowed fire still burned in his heart; for nine years he seemed to stand almost on the very threshold of heaven, the outer man wasting away, but the inner man growing stronger and stronger. His death struggle, to use his own words, was awful beyond conception; for about twenty-four hours it was one continued struggle for breath. He could speak but little, but said to his wife, 'I have no fears;' and at another time ho said to her, 'I have a hope of eternal life.' About fifteen minutes before he ceased to breathe he became easy, laid his finger on his pulse and said, 'Come, Lord Jesus, come quickly.' These were his last words. From an intimate acquaintance during his whole Christian course I will say of him, 'Behold an Israelite indeed, in whom there is no guile.'"
