(16) and Hilda (15), and son Woodrow (13) - the census lists George as a rural delivery postal carrier and reports that he m. at age 20 and Verdie m. at age 18. His draft registration for World War I indicates his employment as teacher in the Upper Mahanoy School District. See Find A Grave Memorial 39295662. The Daily Item, 23 April 1964, P. 10: George C. Mattern, 71. of Rebuck, died Wednesday at 8:10 p.m. at his home. A lifelong resident of Rebuck, he had been in failing health for the past two years. He was for many years a rural mail carrier in the Dornsife area and was last employed as a secretary for Mandate Poultry, Herndon, R. D. He was a member of the St. John's Lutheran Church, Leck Kill. A son of the late Amos and Catherine Hornberger Mattern, he was born at Rebuck June 19, 1892. Surviving are his widow, Verdie Geist Mattern, and the following children; Helen, wife of Earl Snyder, Klingerstown, R. D.; Mrs. Hilda Kuhns, Dornsife, R.D., and Woodrow Mattern, of Rebuck. Also surviving are four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren as well as a number of nieces and nephews.
