[3212] He grew up at the Norman court and organized his own court on the Norman model. Norman influences spread throughout the kingdom in the first part of his reign. Perhaps overly pious, he declined to consummate his marriage. Childless, he named William, Duke of Normandy and his cousin, as his heir to the crown of England. Later in his reign English nobles assumed a more influential role through force. Edward's final wish was to preside at the consecration of the newly rebuilt Westminster Abbey Dec. 28, but his strength gave out and his role had to be taken by a deputy - Edward died in a few days. The son of James Rogers & Elizabeth Rowland, Samuel married Mary Stanton on November 19, 1662. The marriage ws blessed with nine children.
In 1680, Samuel became the first english settler of Mohegan CT. He had, for many years, been a close friend of Uncas, Chief of the Mohegans. Uncas and his son, Owaneco, gave him lands on Saw Mill Brook, in consideration of friendship and services rendered. At his death, he owned many large tracts of land. (Mohegan is presently known as Montville, CT )
History of Montville, Connecticut, By Henry Augustus Baker, Published, 1896, Page 178:
II. SAMUEL (2), b. 12 Dec., 1640, eldest son of James Rogers. and Elizabeth Rowland; married 17 Oct., 1664~ Mary, daughter of Thomas Stanton and Ann Lord, daughter of Thomas, Lord of Hartford. The parents of these two parties entered into a formal contract, each pledging Ð200 as a marriage portion to the couple.
James Rogers, the father of Samuel,in fulfillment of his part of the contract, conveyed to his son his stone house and bakery at the head of Winthrop's Cove, where the couple commenced housekeeping. They lived there only a few years and removed to the outlands of the town in the vicinity of the Mohegan tribe of Indians, and became the first English settlers within the present limits of the town of Montville.
He was twice married, so appears by his last will, executed Dec. 8, 1712, in which he gives "his beloved wife Johanna all she needs." He died 1 Dec., 1713, and was buried in the Old Rogers Burying Ground on the farm where he then lived, and which was afterwards owned by Oliver Baker.

Their surviving children are: Willis Harter, Youngstown, Ohio; Mrs. Annie Carl, Lemoyne; Cyrus Harter, of Bloomfield; Howard Harter, Canonsburg, Pa.; Harry Harter, Lemoyne, and Lula (Mrs. James Hoffman), Shermansdale. One sister, Mrs. Benjamin Wolfe, of Sandy Hill, is also living. Mrs. Harter was a member of the Elliottsburg Lutheran Church and was a good woman, a most kind and devoted wife and mother. Her greatest pleasure was in doing something for her husband and children, and they are greatly distressed over her death, especially her husband who keenly feels the loss of his life partner the good, true woman, who shared all his joys and sorrows. To him and the children is extended the sincere sympathy of all. Funeral services will be held at the house on Friday morning at 10.30 o'clock and burial will be in Bloomfield cemetery."
