The name Morell occurs in 1093 as of Bamburgh, the earls deputy, who killed Malcolm, king of Scots, and in 1095, as sheriff of Bamburgh and kinsman to Robert Mowbray, earl of Northumberland, when he was besieged by William Rufus. Morell for his gallant defence of Bamburgh, was received into the kings court and favour, but another account says he died in exile. It is probably through this match that North Middleton, Long Witton, and Shilvington came into the family."
