[11000] http://www.royalist.info/execute/biog?person=3045 reports: "A poet and author himself, Alphonso sponsored many poets and writers. Moorish culture made inroads into Europe in part because Alphonso encouraged Moorish scholars to study and teach. Alphonso and his scholars compiled a new legal code, the Siete Partidas. In 1252, Alphonso directed that a set of planetary tables be assembled; they came to be known as the Alphonsine Tables." Also see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alfonso_X_of_Castile.

According to Savage, John was Freeman of CT in 1658; probably removed to Hatfield in 1659. His first wife was killed in 1677, along with daughter Bethia. 3 or 4 of his sons went to CT." Thomas m. (2) in 1650 Francis Belcher. Ancestry.com offers: "Coleman Name Meaning - Irish: Anglicized form of Gaelic Ó Colmáin 'descendant of Colmán'. This was the name of an Irish missionary to Europe, generally known as St. Columban (c.540-615), who founded the monastery of Bobbio in northern Italy in 614. With his companion St. Gall, he enjoyed a considerable cult throughout central Europe, so that forms of his name were adopted as personal names in Italian (Columbano), French (Colombain), Czech (Kollman), and Hungarian (Kálmán). From all of these surnames are derived. In Irish and English, the name of this saint is identical with diminutives of the name of the 6th-century missionary known in English as St. Columba (521-97), who converted the Picts to Christianity, and who was known in Scandinavian languages as Kalman. Irish: Anglicized form of Gaelic Ó Clumháin 'descendant of Clumhán', a personal name from the diminutive of clúmh 'down', 'feathers'. English: occupational name for a burner of charcoal or a gatherer of coal, Middle English coleman, from Old English col '(char)coal' + mann 'man'. English: occupational name for the servant of a man named Cole. Jewish (Ashkenazic): Americanized form of Kalman. Americanized form of German Kohlmann or Kuhlmann."

Reaney suggests that in some cases Pointer may have been an occupational name for a tiler or slater whose job was to point the tiles, i.e. render them with mortar where they overlapped. Possibly an altered form of German Pointner, a variant of Bainter."
