"He was in 1532 a resident of London, and is reported to have become wealthy. He was first lord of the Manor of Sharpenhoe of his name...[called] a grocer...[granted] a messuage and tenement called Sonne situate and lying in the parish of St. Mary Wolnoth in Lombard Street...London...." He purchased the Manor of Sharpenhoe in 1578. Elizabeth Merry, dau. of Robert Merry of Northall, was his first of three wives. -"The American Genealogist," XVI:104. Vanessa Trampleasure (vanessa.trampleasure@lineone.net) shared by email 2 April 1999: "My own family descends from William Angell (1560-1629) who moved from Northamptonshire to London and made his fortune as a member of the Fishmongers company rising to become a warden of the company and Fishmonger to King James I and King Charles I. William had numerous children and he married them off to people of a similar standing to himself. Two of William's daughters Ellen and Bridget married a pair of Norton brothers. The following comes from Boyd's Inhabitants of London held at the Society of Genealogy in London.
"Luke Norton (9966) - Of Offley Hertfordshire - Son of Thomas of Sharpenhoe Bedfordshire and Elizabeth daughter of Robert Merry of Northall of the Inner Temple Married Lettice Graveley of Hitchen Hertfordshire daughter of George; children: Graveley = Helen Angell, Benjamin = Bridget Angell, Thomas apprenticed 1621, Lettice 1616 - ? married 1633 Richard Norton, Elizabeth = Stephen Pierce, Martha 1605-1685 at Cattington Herts. = Thomas Coppin, Susan = John Barner, Talbot = Thomas Rotherham, Anne = Eustace Needham.
"The next entries are from the Herald's Visitations: The Visitation of London 1634: Richard Norton of Sharpenhoe in Bedfordshire married ? daughter of Wingate of Sharpenhoe. Their Son William married 1. Mary Hawes and 2. Denniss Cholmondley. With Denniss he had the following children:Thomas, John, Richard. Lettice Norton (see Luke Norton's children) and by Lettice had the following children: Luke eldest and 8 years old in 1634, Richard, John, Ellen and Dorothy. The Visitation of Bedfordshire 1634: Thomas Norton of Sharpenhoe had 2 sons. Eldest Thomas of Sharpenhoe Counsellor of Law and Luke one of the members of the Chancery dwelt at Offley Hertfordshire, Counsellor at Law of the Middle Temple. Luke Norton married Lettice Graveley daughter and sole heir of George of Hitchen in Hertfordshire, the younger brother of Graveley of Graveley of Hertfordshire. Luke and Lettice had the following children: Graveley of Sharpenhoe of the Inner Temple Esq.. Living 1634, eldest son. He married Ellen, daughter of William Angell of London the Serjeant Accatery to King James. Benjamin of London a Linen Draper. Thomas of London a Silkman in Lombard Street, Citizen Draper. Anne who married Eustace Needham Esq. of Little Wimondley Hertfordshire. Lettice who died 1679 and married 1. Robert Cheney of Bramhanger in Luton Bedfordshire, he died 1630, then next she married Richard Norton in 1633 - Richard was a Linen Draper of Cornhill. Elizabeth married Dr. Pierce of Hitchen Hertfordshire, a Divine [i.e. an ordained minister]. Martha married Jan 29 1626/7 Thomas Coppin of Market Cell Hertfordshire, one of them died 1685 aged 79. Susan married John Berners of Sharfield Hertfordshire, Gent. Talbot married Thomas Rotherham of Ffarley Bedfordshire, Gent. Luke's arms were listed as: Arms quartered - 1 and 4 Gules a fret argent a crescent for difference over all a bend vair or and gules Norton alias Neruile 2 and 3 sable a cross pointed argent charged with a crescent Graveley.
"Following are a few bits I have on Thomas Norton the MP: England under the Tudors by G R Elton - The following revolved around pressure put upon Queen Elizabeth to secure the succession: In the Commons there was a body of some 40 or 50 very active members, mostly with puritan sympathies, who dominated the less independent men and were not afraid of taking issue with the privy councillors who represented the queen and government. The unofficial leader of the first of this 'choir' , as a contemporary called them, was Thomas Norton, the first of the great puritan parliament men and the hero of the two sessions of this parliament... Thomas Norton...he died (1584) after nearly 25 years in the commons. A ready debater, skilful tactician, and strongley principled puritan, her more than anyone had nursed and shaped the parliamentary opposition of the reign. His reward was a general fame as 'Master Norton the Parliament-man', though it is only recently, after being for long overshadowed by the more assertive and dramatic Wentworth that he has come into his own again. (note at bottom of the page - Norton is the real hero of professor Neale's Elizabeth I and her Parliaments 1559-81).
"Now for a couple of stray Nortons - but who fit in with the general wealth level: A Colonel Richard Norton was a good friend of Oliver Cromwell. He had fought in Manchester's army and was MP for Hampshire. This Norton acted as the go between in the marriage negotiations for Cromwell's son Richard and Dorothy Mayor. One reason for thinking this guy could be connected is that Bridget and Ellen Angell had a sister Mary who had married John Claypole, their eldest son married Oliver Cromwell's favourite daughter Elizabeth. In addition the tie with the Norton sisters must have been close as 3 of Mary's children were named for her sisters, Graveley, Norton and Benjamin. Another Norton - who would be amusing to link up with is Bonham Norton, he was a book publisher during Elizabeth, James and Charles' reign, not just that but the Royal Printer. He is noted for publishing many great works - however, he has gone down in history for publishing the 'naughty bible', the version which left out the word not - thus the 7th commandment read 'Thou shalt commit adultery'."
