[9638] Charles emigrated to IL about 1887 and farmed near Sparland, then in Saratoga Twp. until his retirement about 1925 when they moved to Milo. "The Perry County Democrat [New Bloomfield, Pennsylvania], 16 December 1942," p. 3: "Charles L. Thumma, whose home in his youth was at Loysville, died at his late residence in Milo township, Bureau county, Illinois, on the 21st of November, 1942, at the age of 83 years, 4 months and 24 days. The deceased was a son of John and Julia Ann (Briner) Thumma and was born in Loysville June 28, 1859. He went to Illinois about fifty-five years ago and together with his brother, Samuel, took up farming. He was united in marriage to Myrtle Aletta Van Ostrand in Henry, Ill., on December 20, 1892. They lived on a farm near Sparland for about six years, then moved to Saratoga township where they resided until they retired from farming about seventeen years ago, when they moved to Milo. Mr. and Mrs. Thumma were the parents of four children, Glenn, of Milo; John Harold, of Whitefish, Mont.; Anna Marie (Mrs. Marie Max), Peoria, and Ariel Mabelle, of Peoria, who with the widow and ten grandchildren, survive. He is also survived by one sister, Mrs. Anna Doyle, of Henry. A brother, Samuel, preceded him in death. Mr. Thumma was of a quiet disposition, a kind father and a true neighbor. He loved to read and always kept abreast of the times by his daily papers and radio news broadcasts. Mr. Thumma was a member of the Saratoga Methodist Church, where services were held Tuesday, November 24, with the Rev. Cobb, of Bradford, officiating."

The 1930 census of Coal Twp., Northumberland Co., PA reports that he is a carpenter, employed by a lumber company, and that he m. at age 27 to Mable who was then age 28. Living with them in 1930 in daughter Caroline S. Welker.
Shamokin News-Dispatch, 13 April 1960, p. 2: Fred E. Welker, 73, of 26 North Eighth Street, died suddenly yesterday afternoon at 4:00 shortly after being stricken with an acute heart seizure in his home Widely known throughout the Shamokin area as a contract carpenter, Mr. Welker had been under a doctor's care for a previous illness, but had no immediate indication of a heart condition. He was stricken In the living room of his home and died before medical assistance could be summoned. A life long resident of Shamokin, Mr. Welker was born April 2, 1887, a son of the late Amos and Barbara (Guggenberger) Welker, He attended Shamokin public schools. Mr. Welker worked as a carpenter most of his life and at one time was employed by local lumber companies. During later years, he was self-employed as a contract carpenter. The late North Eighth Street resident was married October 21, 1914, in Shamokin to the former Miss Mabel Ressler. He was an active member of St. John's United Church nf Christ, the Masonic Lodge of Shamokin and the Carpenters and Joiners Union. Survivors include the widow: one daughter, Miss Carolyn Welker, Philadelphia, and three, sisters, Misses Edna and Lura Welker, Shamokin, and Mrs. Harry Harper, Elizabethtown. . . . . Burial will be in Shamokin Cemetery.
