He was born July 7, 1904, at Winter Harbor, the son of Joseph and Annie (McKay) Gerrish. Alton graduated from Winter Harbor High School in 1923. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard for three years on board the U.S. CGC Dix. In 1933, Alton began working at the Winter Harbor Post Office and became post master in 1942, retiring in 1962. He and his wife, Mary, were members of the Unionville Church of God and had attended the South Gouldsboro Church for many years. He was a member and a past master of the Winter Harbor Lodge No. 192 AF & AM for more than 69 years. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, (June 26, 1930), Mary of Winter Harbor; one son, Joseph Maurice Gerrish of Winter Harbor; one daughter, Janet Marie (Gerrish) Buffett of Sunapee, N.H.; eight grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, three sisters, Cora Bell Foster of Utah, Marie Clark and Adelaide Wakefield, both of Winter Harbor; several nieces and nephews. Alton was predeceased by a grandson, Russel Alton Gerrish; a brother, Harold F. Gerrish; and a sister, Ina Bean."

[13460] Robert Nelson wrote 1/98 via Internet: All descendents of Edward and death and marriage dates and locations recorded in the Shinn/Wilson/Nelson family bible (1827) which is in my possession. In addition, Edward and Rosanna are buried at the North Star Cemetery, in North Star, MI. Edward's parents, listed in his marriage record, are L. F. Nelson and T. M. Wilson. Edward r. Lansing, MI at the time of the 1910 federal census which lists him as an employee of a carpet store. "Lansing State Journal, 16 January 1943," p. 5: "Edward Lyman Nelson, 54. died at the home, 118 Allen street Friday: He is survived by the widow, Anna; two sons. Kenneth and Harold, L., of Lansing; a daughter. Mrs. Leon a R. Gilbert of Pontiac; three grandchildren; a brother. Frank Nelson of Alma, and a sister, Mrs. Leona Henry of North Star. Mr. Nelson had been in the coal and gasoline business in Lansing for the past 25 years, and was a member of the South Street Church of God. . . . Interment will be at North Star."
