Klinger, 71, widow of Monroe Klinger, died at her home in Gratz Sunday afternoon. She was a daughter of the late Preston and Mary (Stine) Artz, and was a member of Simeon's Lutheran Church, Gratz. Survivors are the following children: Mrs. Clayton Harman, Hegins; Wallace Klinger, Lykens; Stanley Klinger, Millersburg; Mrs. Luther Daniels, Harrisburg; Allen Klinger, Northumberland; Mrs. George Shade and Blair Klinger, both of Gratz. Other survivors are eighteen grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, two sisters, Mrs. Jennie Moyer of Herndon and Mrs. Sylvester Hoffman, Gratz; and two brothers, Daniel Artz, Millersburg and Austin Artz of Lykens R. D. Services were held from the residence at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon. Rev. W. Z. Artz, pastor of the Lykens Valley Lutheran Paiish officiated and interment was made in the Gratz Cemetery."

He held the fortress of Trepol in Kiev in 1193, and was stationed at Torchesk on the Ros River in 1207 when he was driven out by Vsevolod 'Chermnyi' and fled to the principality of Smolensk where he took the eastern outpost of Torzhok. He invaded Novgorod in 1208, installing himself as prince in place of Sviatoslav Vsevolodich. As Prince of Novgorod, he defeated the principality of Vladimir at Lipitsa in 1216 in order to defend Novgorodian autonomy and commerce. He left Novgorod in 1217 after being asked to intervene in Galich by Leszko I Prince of Krakow, expelled Kálmán of Hungary from Galich in 1218 and established himself as Prince of Galich. He was himself expelled in 1219 by Hungary, but expelled the Hungarians again in 1221 remaining in control until 1226. He negotiated a protective alliance with his father-in-law against the Mongols, but their forces were crushed at the River Kalka 16 Jun 1223. m --- Kuman princess, daughter of Kuthen [Köten] Khan of Kumans. William had also five illegitimate children, a son and four daus., from each of whom sprang one of the claimants to the Crown in 1291-92. William I was succeeded by his son, King Alexander II (reigned 1214-1249); Alexander II was succeeded by his son, King Alexander III (r. 1249-86), whose children are Alexander (d. 1284), David (d. 1281) and Margaret (d. 1283, m. Eric II, King of Norway - they had Margaret, "Maid of Norway", d. 1290). William inherited the earldom of Northumberland in 1152, but five years later Henry II of England annexed it. Hoping to regain this earldom, William invaded England in 1174 and was captured at Alnwick. He then signed the Treaty of Falaise in which he acknowledged Henry as his feudal superior. In 1189 William recovered the overlordship of Scotland by the Quitclaim of Canterbury, paying the new English king 10,000 marks. In 1192 Pope Celestine III declared the Scottish church independent of any English hierarch. {See "The Acts of William I," G.W.S.Barrow, 1971.} William is buried at the Abbey of Abroath.
