[10693] Reference: "Medieval English Ancestors of Certain Americans," Carl Boyer III (Santa Clarita, CA, 2001), p. 67. Hugh was summoned as Lord Despencer 14 Dec 1264 and was Chief Justiciar of England and a leader of the baronial party - and was killed at Evesham in August, 1265{- he had a grandfather of the same name who was sherrif of Salop and Staffordshire under King Henry III, and he had both a son and grandson named Hugh who figured largely in the struggles of Kings Edward II & III - see Burke's "Dormant Peerages" (London, 1883, pp. 165-66.)} The second Sir Hugh was Earl of Winchester (1322-26) and was executed by Mortimer's party 27 Oct 1326 at Bristol at age 64. The third Sir Hugh married the eldest of the Clare heiresses (and thereby received part of the Gloucester holdings); he was executed late in November, 1336 at Hereford for assisting Edward II to elude the Marcher barons. See "Edward II," Harold F. Hutchison (N.Y.: Stein and Day, 1972). Carr P. Collins, Jr., "Royal Ancestors of Magna Charta Barons" (Dallas: 1959), p. 78, identifies him as son of Thomas le Despencer and states that Sir Hugh is of Loughborough, Burton, Freely, Arnesby, Parlington, Hillam, Ryhall, Belmesthorp, Rutland, Sibsey and Aukborough, was a Knight, Constable of Horston, Devizes, Oxford, Orford, Nottingham Castles and the Tower of London, Justiciar of England; was born about 1223 and slain at the Battle of Evesham on 08-04-1265; married about 1260 Aline Basset, heiress of Wycombe, Compton-Basset and Woolton-Basset. Aline Basset m. (2) Roger Bigod; she is dau. of Sir Philip Basset of Wycombe, Bucks, Justiciar, and Hawise, dau. of Sir Matthew de Louvaine of Little Easton, Essex. NOTE: It appears that his father is a son of Thomas named Hugh le Despencer, b. ca. 1197 at Ryhall, Rutlandshire, died 23 Feb 1238, wife unknown. Homer Beers James states "He died in 1265, slain fighting for Simon de Montfort at Evesham." Cf. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hugh_le_Despencer,_1st_Baron_le_Despencer.

[57144] Find A Grave memorial 254782489 offers: "With heavy hearts we announce the passing of our mother to the loving arms of her heavenly Father. Mom was a homemaker, doing all the work around the house that is required to raise a family. When we boys graduated and left home, she applied for a job in the Jonesport - Beals school system and spent 15 plus years as a substitute teacher/study hall monitor. She loved to read, knit, listen to music and dance. She loved to eat and would try anything at least once. She loved people and always saw the good in everybody; she invited everyone to visit her on her porch. She loved sitting on the porch in the sun with her binoculars watching the boats go by and listening to the men talk on the VHF radio. I can hear her say, 'The mouths on those boys!' but she didn't stop listening. She was a neighborhood mom to all the kids; all were welcome to her home. She is pre-deceased by her mom, Kathleen E. Smith/Palmer/Alley and her dad, Ernest S. Palmer; her husband, Calvert N. Carver; her son, Randy S. Blackwood; her twin sister, Lucille and Lucille's husband, Wayne Woodward; many aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews, all of whom are missed dearly. She is survived by sons Bill Blackwood, Ronald Carver and his wife, Lisa, Steven Carver, and daughter in-law Dot Blackwood; grandchildren, Shanna Blackwood, Erick Blackwood and his wife, Crystal, Terrell Carver, Kristy Blackwood and her partner, Joe Murray, Noel Blackwood and his wife, Andrea, and Royce Blackwood. Her surviving great-grandchildren are Zach Vincent, Emma Vincent, Tyler Blackwood, and Caden Blackwood. She is also remembered by many family members and friends. She was a proud member of the Jonesport Historical Society and served as an officer for many years."
