He was born June 11, 1922, a son of the late Jeremiah "Jerry" and Lulu (Caylor) Mottern. May 24, 1948, he married his wife of 50 years, Helen (Nolph) Mottern, who preceded him in death in 1998. Mr. Mottern was born, raised and lived his entire life around the Sprankle Mills area. He served in World War II as a member of the 101st Airborne division, in which he received a Purple Heart for being wounded at the Battle of the Bulge. For years, Mr. Mottern hauled milk with his brother and later worked as a supervisor for the Apollo Gas Corporation. Surviving relatives include a son, Jerry Mottern of Olean, N.Y.; and his loving companion, Doris Kunselman of Ringgold. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a brother, Ernest Mottern."
