[5491] Moritz resigned the government of Hesse-Cassel in 1627 to his son Wilhelm V. http://www.hoasm.org/IVC/Moritz.html offers: "Moritz, Landgrave of Hesse-Cassel (known as 'The Learned') (1572 - 1632) German ruler (1592-1627) and composer. Not only a patron of the arts (he sent Schütz to study in Venice) he was also a player of many instruments and a competent composer. A Protestant, he published congregational psalm tunes, motets which show the influence initially of Lassus but, after Schütz's return from Italy, of the Italian style. His dances and secular songs survive in MS; unfortunately his court's flourishing musical life was destroyed by the Thirty Years' War." [47852] "The Ellsworth American, 14 October 2020": "Bucksport - Harland (Jerry) Wardwell Leach Jr., 86, passed peacefully on Oct. 5, 2020, with his family by his side. Jerry was born March 2, 1934, in Penobscot to Harland (Gankie) Leach Sr. and Ella Mae Howard Leach. Jerry lived on Cape Rosier as a child, a place he loved dearly. He later became a lifelong resident of Bucksport when his father went to work in the mill. Jerry or Bumpa, as his grandchildren and great-grandchildren called him, is survived by three loving daughters, Beth Roderick and partner Dan, Karen Wardwell and husband, John, and Loretta Alley and husband, Ben. Bumpa was blessed with five grandchildren, Julie Trojano (Shawn), Jana Gray (Damon) and John Wardwell (Darci) along with Corey Alley (Jessica) and Jesse Alley (Karrie). He has 11 great-grandchildren, Abby, Evan, Gavin, Avery, Julian, Isobel, John, Colin, Monte, Deonte and Lily, and he loved spending time with all of them. Jerry is also survived by a sister, Rosemary Pease, brother-in-law John Keegan (Norma), sister-in-law Ellen Hersey (Don) and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, his wife, Janice, sister Cynthia Leach and son-in-law Russell Roderick. Jerry was a great athlete in high school and made many lifelong friends there. As so many others of his generation, he entered the St. Regis Paper Mill immediately after high school and worked there until his retirement in 1996. He also was a proud member of the Bucksport Fire Department. Jerry was very 'handy' and built his own home and camp, as well as helped to build many of his familys homes. He took great joy in camping, hunting and fishing with many memorable trips to Cape Rosier, Craig Pond and other places around Maine with his family and many friends. He lived by the motto 'work hard and play hard' and was often the life of the party. After his retirement, he joined the coffee group that met daily at Bucksport McDonalds. He looked forward to that every day and enjoyed all the friendships he made there. Not surprisingly, Jerry passed two weeks after his soulmate Janice. After 68 loving years of marriage, their wish was to go together. His caring family was by his side and take great comfort in that."

The "Hays Daily News", Hays, KS published Ellen's obituary 9 Jan 2006: "Ellen Wilson Koci was a woman born before her time. She was spirited, feisty and proud and stood up for equal rights for women long before most women ever thought of it. She was a shrewd businesswoman with a sterling set of ethics and high expectations for others. Heaven help anyone who tried in any way to short-change her or anyone else! She was fiercely proud of her Scottish heritage on the Wilson side of her family and often talked about the brothers who came from Scotland to escape poverty, worked in the mines in Pennsylvania and finally moved out West to find their fortune. She was equally proud of being a descendent of Denham and Ellen Stubbs, who helped found La Crosse and made the community prosper. Ellen attended college and thought of a career at a time when most women were thinking of a husband. She taught two years in a country school before Milo Jr. Koci came along and changed her plans. But Milo was poor, there was a Depression across the land, and, at that time, a married woman was deemed unfit to teach children. Ellen knew that rules were meant to be broken. She married Milo and kept it secret until they could get on their feet. Married life and getting started on their own farm was not easy. The dust bowl descended and Ellen had to cover the crib of her first-born daughter, Avanelle, with a wet sheet so she could keep breathing. Ellen scrubbed, fed farm hands and managed the business end of the farm while Milo applied his excellent skills to making the farmland grow good crops and increase in size. She figured out when to sell the wheat for the best price and pinched every penny until it screamed so that each piece of land and eventually, what they called "the home place: was paid for outright. She and Milo never bought anything on time, took out a loan or owed a credit card. By the time their daughters Gaynelle and Lois were born, they had moved to a slightly better house. The linoleum on the kitchen floor only raised a couple of inches when cruel winds swept across the prairie.
Their fierce belief in the value of education brought many benefits to the little one-room school on the hill a half-mile east of their farm. The teacher stayed in the best bedroom of their small farmhouse and Ellen kept the hectograph ready in the refrigerator for duplicating the next day's lessons. By 1948 Ellen and Milo could afford their own farm home and bought the property on Highway 183 where they lived for many years. They worked hard and paid their way no matter what: two of their children had expensive illnesses, polio, and all three of the children went to college. In 1987 when they moved into La Crosse, Milo continued to farm their land for
several years and Ellen continued to help those in need, furnish food for church functions, and had more time for playing bridge, one of her favorite pursuits until she was more than 90 years old. After Milo's death in 1989, Ellen continued to manage the farmland and kept what one accountant termed 'the best books in the county.'
She never stopped fighting for rights of women and fair treatment for all people. Her daughter Avanelle is married to Michael Joynt of Naples, Fla., Gaynelle and her
husband Oren Campbell live in Everett, Wash., and Lois and Robert Kershner live in Brandon, Fla, Ellen will be missed by her children, five grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren, and hopefully, all of the women who profited by her sense of independence and men who learned from it."
