A file in Ancestry.com offers: "Samuel Galloway was born 1675 in Wigton, Scotland. He married Elizabeth Graham, abt. 1710. Elizabeth's date of birth is abt. 1695, in Kurkcudbright, Scotland. She was only 15 years old when married, quite normal in that time period. They had 7 children while in Scotland (in order according to P. Galloway): Samuel, John, William, James, Peter, Thomas and George. It is believed that Samuel died abt. 1723. Elizabeth, along with their 7 stalwart boys with sandy hair immigrated to the Galloway District of County Antrim, Ireland. In 1740 the family immigrated to Pennsylvania. Note: Family trees differ on the dates of these seven boys, some trees listing names more than once and/or show more than the seven we know. Thus we will defer to Paul Galloway's research.
Elizabeth and the remaining children settled in Cumberland, Pennsylvania which was near the renowned Indian Chief Logan's famous springs. Many Scotch-Irish immigrated to this area. Chief Logan was angry when they claimed squatter's rights on Indian land.
1750 found the Galloway's in trouble with the Proprietary Governor of Pennsylvania. Five cabins located on land the Indians considered prime hunting ground were being occupied by squatters. William and George shared one of these. When the Justices of Cumberland County discovered the squatters, the cabins were burned and the families forced to move off Indian property. In 1754 the Galloway's were in Franklin County, Pennsylvania
The Galloways once again found trouble involving the Indians, but this time the damage would be permanent. On 13 November 1755 in Armaugh Township, Chambersburg, Pennsylvania the Indians scalped Elizabeth, William's wife Martha, and their two children (as reported in The Pennsylvania Gazette) . According to various historical accounts in 1755 there were 3,000 bearing arms in this area; by 1756 only 100 were left standing.
The Galloways moved quite a bit, most likely because of the threats of the land including Indian attacks. They moved from Loudoun County, Virginia (1757), Franklin County (1760), and returned to Mifflin, Pennsylvania (1765).
Samuel was the first born of Samuel and Elizabeth; a Covenanter and located near Chief Logan's Big Spring in the Kisocquilla Valley on the Juniata River, Pennsylvania in 1740. Searching for additional information on Samuel, we find a census report (1748 - 1776) showing a Samuel in Maryland Colony and All Hallows Parish, Anne Arundel, MD; that would be Thomas' son Samuel. Other census reports (1808 and later) show a Samuel in Greene County, OH; which would be George's son. Some family trees claim this Samuel married Elizabeth McClellan abt 1777; however, we question this since George's son, Samuel, married Elizabeth McClellan.
John probably remained in Pennsylvania; According to Paul Galloway, John married, but no further information.
William married Martha (last name unknown) and they had a son named William. Martha died 13 November 1755. She was scalped by Indians, along with Elizabeth Graham Galloway and two children in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania. William had no will, but left letters of administration dated January 20, 1763; the administrator was a Samuel Dickey. In 1814, forty-seven years later, a Wm. Dickey signed Samuel GALLOWAY's will. To our knowledge William did not remarry.
James, according to Paul Galloway, James married a BUCHANNAN (first name unknown). For more, see James GALLOWAY (1717) Story.
Peter "went to South Carolina". Another Ancestry researcher believes he has found Peter - ". . . who arrived in the Ninety Six District of South Carolina, abt 1750. Peter married Margaret (last name unknown) either before arriving in South Carolina or shortly after. According to an oral will he made on 26 October 1774 he had 8 children: Peter, James, John, Mary, Elizabeth, Jean, Anna, and Martha. Peter's death was abt. 1787.
This researcher also states:: "the only livestock listed in Peter's will was two gray mares and one heifer with calf. If he had any involvement with horse/belted Galloway cattle rustling in Scotland, he had long-since made restitution and/or abandoned it, and even if true, it was no doubt out of necessity for survival or repayment in kind to the English border landholders who so often dealt with extreme oppression/pinching against the Scots."
Thomas settled in Baltimore County, Maryland. He married Elizabeth Anne CLARK in 1741 on an estate they named My Lady's Manor. They had five children: William, Ruth, Mary, Thomas, and Aquila. One of Thomas' grandsons, Elihu (1784 - 1863) migrated to Kentucky and married Mary ELLIOTT then moved on to Jennings County, Indiana.
George married Rebekah JUNKIN in 1741; convention holds she is the sister of Joseph, Thomas and James JUNKIN. It is also interesting to note that tradition holds George was born the same year as his father, Samuel died. Tradition also holds that the Galloway family left Scotland due to religious persecution. For more, see George GALLOWAY & Rebekah JUNKIN and the JUNKIN Stories.
