"He was born at Easton, Massachusetts 11 October 1763 [i] ; died at Marietta, Ohio, 25 December 1808, unmarried. Anselm was the eldest son of Colonel Benjamin, an Original Member of the Massachusetts Society of the Cincinnati, and Huldah (White)Tupper. The following sketch for his service in the Revolutionary War appears in Massachusetts Soldiers and Sailors of the Revolutionary War (16:143-144) Ansel Tupper (also given as Anselm), Chesterfield. Ensign, Col. Tuppers (11th) Regt.; list of officers promoted in the Continental Army and for whom warrants were made out; warrant issued Sept. 16, 1780; also, list of commissioned officers of 11th Mass. Regt., dated Sept. 15, 1780, as returned by Col. Benjamin Tupper, together with a list of officers recommended to fill vacancies in his regiment by said Col. Tupper and Gen. Washington; said Ansel Tupper reported as an Ensign who had served as a volunteer from March 15, 1780; ordered in Council Sept. 26, 1780, that said officers be commissioned; also, Lieutenant, Col. Tuppers Regt.; Continental Army pay accounts for service from Sept. 26, 1780, to Dec. 31, 1780; residence, Chesterfield; also, Ensign, 11th Mass. Regt.; return of officers for clothing, dated Boston, Dec. 15, 1780; also, communication addressed to His Excellency Gov. Hancock, dated Boston, Dec. 11, 1780, signed by Col. Benjamin Tupper, stating that His Excellency Gen. Washington had expressed his opinion that all vacancies which existed before Nov. 1, 1780, ought to be filled in order to bring about a settlement of ranks as authorized under the new arrangement for the army, and recommending that certain officers be promoted to fill vacancies in the 11th Mass. Regt.; said Tupper, Ensign, to be promoted to Lieutenant, his appointment to date from Sept. 1, 1780; ordered in Council Dec. 15, 1780, that warrants be issued to said officers; also, Ensign, Capt. Stephen Abbots (Light Infantry) co., Col. Tuppers Regt.; muster roll of filed, staff, and commissioned officers for Oct., Nov., and Dec., 1780, dated Hutts near West Point; appointed Sept. 26, 1780; also, Lieutenant and Adjutant, Col. Benjamin Tuppers (10th) Regt., commanded by Col. Thomas Marshall prior to Jan. 1, 1781; service from Jan. 1, 1781, 24 mos.; also, Lieutenant, 6th Mass. Regt. commanded by Col. Tupper; return of officers entitled to the commutation of five years full pay in lieu of half pay, agreeable to act of Congress of March 22, 1783; also, Adjutant, 2d Mass. Regt.; muster roll of filed and staff officers for May and June, 1783, with such non-commissioned officers as were not attached to any company; also, Lieutenant and Adjutant, Lieut. Col. E. Sprouts (2nd) Regt.; returns of effectives between July 11, 1783, and Aug. 15, 1783, dated Philadelphia, signed by said Tupper; also, order on Capt. Heywood, Agent, 6th Mass. Regt., payable to Lieut. Joshua Danforth, dated Chesterfield, March 12, 1784, signed by said Tupper, for wages, etc., due for service as Lieutenant and Adjutant in 6th Mass. Regt.
After the war he was engaged as a surveyor of the Northwest Territory (Ohio) with his father; removed in the first group of settlers to Marietta, Ohio, 7 April 1788, with his parents. He was the first school teacher in Marietta; was said to have been proficient in the classical languages and in mathematics, and to have possessed a polished demeanor. Tiring of frontier life, he went on a long voyage: down the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers; across the Atlantic; through the Mediterranean to Trieste, Austria-Hungary; returned home several years later.
Anselm was an Original Member of the Massachusetts Society of the Cincinnati from 1783 until 1808. He was granted a Bounty Land Warran 1 April 1790. [ii] A portrait of Anselm was reproduced in Chafflins History of Easton, Mass. (1886) on p. 256.
