Robert's place in this ancestry is questionable. Encyclopaedia Britannica, 1956 Edition, 21:279: "STAFFORD (Family). This famous English house was founded in England by Robert, a younger brother of Ralf de Tosny (Toeni), of a noble Norman house, who was standard-bearer of the duchy. Robert received at the Conquest a great fief extending into seven counties and became known as Robert de Stafford from his residence at Stafford castle. With his son the male line became extinct, and his sister's husband, Hervey Bagot, one of his knightly tenants, succeeded to the fief in her right (1194); their descendant Edmund de Stafford (that surname having been
assumed) was summoned as a baron in 1299." His ancestry as given here is from Burke's "Dormant Peerages" (London, 1883) which states that Robert was sheriff of Staffordshire "from the 2nd to the end of the 6th year, inclusive, of King Henry II's reign, and in six years afterwards paid towards the marriage portion of the king's dau. 60 marks for 60 knights' fees. This Robert performed a pilgrimage to Jerusalem, and d. about the year 1176, and was succeeded by his son, Robert de Stafford, at whose
decease, about 1139 [sic], s.p., the feudal barony and lordships devolved upon his only sister and heiress, Milicent de Stafford....". Cf. http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Famille_de_Tosny.
