"The Spencers: A Personal History of an English Family," Charles Spencer (NY: St. Martin's Press, 1999), p. 7: "Henry married Isabel, with whom he has four boys. When he died, in 1476, Henry's last will was sealed with the coat of arms that the family bears today." He was the first in the line to use the surname Spencer. He was of Badbt, Northamptonshire, the primary county with which the family has been associated across the years." However, see "Studies in Peerage and Family History," John Horace Round (Westminster: Archibald Constable & Co., 1901), pp. 279ff. for discussion of his ancestry and his genealogy - Round convincingly disputes the Despencer ancestry! Also see Clifford L. Stott's exellent article about the Spencers in "The NEHG Register, Vol. 174," pp. 199-215.
An unverified file in trees.ancestry.com: "The surname of Spencer was derived from the Old French 'despensier' a butler or steward, one in charge of the wine cellar of a large house or mansion. The name was brought into England in the wake of the Norman Conquest of 1066. Early records of the name mention Robert le Despencer, 1204 Salisbury. William le Spencer, 1275 Hampshire. Thomas del Spencer of Yorkshire was listed in the Yorkshire Poll Tax of 1379. From the 13th century downwards, several persons of the name were documented in Scotland, where the name was taken by settlers. Roger Dispensator witnessed a charter by the Bishop of Moray, granting the church of Deveth to Spyny in the year 1202. Thomas Dispensator witnessed a charter of lands in 1232. A ship belonging to Laurence de Spense and other Scottish merchants was shipwrecked at Whitbernes, near Newcastle-on-Tyne in 1365. Fergus de la Spens held a tenement in Edinburgh in 1392. John de Spencer was the burgess of Aberdeen in 1444. Herbert Spencer (1820-1903) English philosopher and Sociologist; founder of the evolutionist philosophy, the principle of which was laid down in his 'Programme of a System of Synthetic Philosophy'. Alba, the country which became Scotland, was once shared by four races; the Picts who controlled most of the land north of the Central Belt; the Britons, who had their capital at Dumbarton and held sway over the south west, including modern Cumbria; the Angles, who were Germanic in origin and annexed much of the Eastern Borders in the seventh century, and the Scots. The latter came to Alba from the north of Ireland late in the 5th century to establish a colony in present day Argyll, which they named Dalriada, after their homeland. The Latin name Scotti simply means a Gaelic speaker. The associated arms are recorded in Sir Bernard Burkes General Armory. Ulster King of Arms in 1884."

[47640] Find A Grave memorial 142154068 offers: "A letter written by Frances Wood (cousin) to George S Wood from Sargentville, Maine. in August 1896, Your father [Jonathan Fisher Wood] came here the 22nd of April, 1882. He said he had been living in Greenland, Colorado, He made his home with us until September 1893. when he left us and went among his relatives in Blue Hill, Maine. We expected him back and he probably would have come if he had lived a little longer. The first winter, he lived with my sister in the town of Penobscot. The next, and last of his life, he stayed with a niece in Blue Hill. He had heart trouble, and his mind had failed a great deal. Otherwise he was well, so that he cut her firewood. She is a widow and lives a half mile back from the road, and a mile from her nearest neighbor. On the morning of May 3 1885 (age 80) he went out and set fire to a brush heap; it was very dry and the fire spread. He worked hard all day fighting it. Was so tired and frightened he could not eat any supper, and at nine o'clock at night he went out again. His niece says she tried to stop him. but he WOULD go. He said if he did not put it out, he would have to go to state prison and he would rather die than go there. She followed him but lost sight of him - he did not return. In the morning, a search was made and he was found dead and his body half consumed by the fire. It is thought he died of heart disease; was dead before the fire reached him. He lay on his face, one hand grasping a small green tree. The grass was green under him. His face was not burned. He was found at 10 o'clock in the forenoon and the fire had burned but a little way beyond him. So we hope that his death was painless. His remains were wrapped in a quilt and put in a casket and placed in the tomb until arrangements were made for the burial. It was all that could be done under the circumstances. My sister's son took charge of his things and paid expenses - he had no money. A half dollar and a few pennies were picked up where he lay. He was the last of a family of 14 children. He is buried beside his father in Seaside Cemetary, Blue Hill. They are the only ones buried in the lot."
