[45173] "Ironwood Daily Globe [Ironwood, Michigan], 9 November 1961," p. 7: "Flint (AP) -"'Well, I probably won't be seeing you anymore,' Herbert Dean Jr. joked to a friend Wednesday before he took off in his home-made Delta wing airplane. Then trouble developed 200 feet up and the plane plummeted the turf of Bishop Airport, mortally injuring the pilot. Dean died two hours later, leaving a wife and four children. The 33-year-old machinist labored two and a half years to build the experimental craft, named 'Beckoning Angel.' He told friends he had dreams of his plane as a prototype for a commercial venture. He built the craft in the basement of his home for an estimated $6,000. In September he moved wall to get the plane outside to an airport for final pre-flight adjustments. In earlier tests, he lifted 'Beckoning Angel' 10 feet off the ground. A Federal Aviation Agency inspector gave an O.K. to rise 25 feet in the fatal test. He revved up the 180-horsepower piston engine located in the rear and shot the plane down the runway. Spectators said he called 'No soap' over the radio just the craft lifted. They said it shot skyward, dipped toward the runway, then shot up a second time before falling."

[54889] "The Ellsworth American [Ellsworth, Maine]," 9 October 2023: "Swans Island - Dusty Don Staples passed away peacefully Sept. 9, 2023, surrounded by the love of his family. He was 67 years old, born on Aug. 1, 1956, in Bar Harbor. Dusty was raised on Swan's Island. After graduating from MDI High School, he joined the United States Coast Guard and served four years; three of which stationed at Governor's Island, N.Y. and one in Portsmouth, N.H. While in the Coast Guard, he received the Marksman Ribbon for Pistols, Sharpshooter Ribbon for Rifles, the Good Conduct Medal and several other commendations. Upon discharge from the service, he maintained an ocean career. On Swan's Island he was primarily both a lobsterman and arborist - or 'woodcutter' as he preferred. Maintaining successful business ventures by means of integrity and dedicated work ethic his entire life, Dusty was a man of both the land and sea and had a unique intuition for all his work. He was a methodical man and had a distinct, rational way of doing things. He was always recognized for his organized manner; notably, his immaculately clean lobster boats, meticulously built and stacked lobster traps and neatly stacked wood piles - the list goes on. He took pride in caring for and maintaining his assets. A natural 'MacGyver-like' mind where he was able to fix anything, or at least get it working for the needed time. He enjoyed finding old items and restoring them to near new condition. Work was his vacation. Some of the best times shared with him were within his work. He always had projects going; often lending a hand in projects of friends or relatives. He regularly put his own needs aside to help others, aiding vessels in distress or lost in the fog while he was out lobstering or volunteering while his vessel was moored, leaving safe harbor to assist. Dusty was well known for his charismatic ways and dry wit; his one line 'zingers,' as he called them, will remain in his close-knit social circle forever. He didn't need attention and valued his privacy - although never withdrew his listening ear. He showed his love for people rather than telling. He has been described as a truly genuine man and well-respected member of the community where he was admired by many. He made a positive impression on, and made friends with, people wherever he went. He will be missed by many families and many friends.Often his son, daughter-in-law and grandchildren would visit for long weekends, and that was the only time that work didnt come first. He loved spending time with them and his wife, and they were his greatest joys. He got the biggest kick out of the grandkids and loved them each dearly. While recovering from cancer treatments and surgery, and restricted to "light" duty, Dusty constructed wind chimes for his son and family-they will be listening in the wind for his reminders. The family would like to thank the visitors, people who sent cards, phone calls, messages, stories, gifts and thoughts of Dusty while he was home or at Northern Light Maine Coast Hospital; it meant so much to all of us. Also, the nurses, doctors and the hospice caretakers associated with his stay. All gave him excellent care and were considerate, thoughtful and kind throughout his stay. Dusty will be forever loved and remembered by his wife, Tammie; son, Kyle; daughter-in-law, Autumn; grandsons, Tabor and Avery; granddaughter, Tatum; mother, Martha Reed; father Donnie (who predeceased Dusty) and his wife Bonnie; brother, Galen 'Sput' and his wife Janice; brother, Kevin and his wife Debbie; sister Lorrie and her husband Mike; along with many loved nieces, nephews, in-laws, friends and their families."
