As you probably know, Beauchamp is an old English family name and was the family name for the Duke of Warwick until the line died out from lack of male heirs. Name variations: Beecham, Beacham. 'This illustrious name is found in many countries of Europe - e.g. in France as Beauchamp, in Scotland as Campbell, in England as Fairfield, in Germany as Schönaw, and in Italy as Campobello. It was introduced into England at the Norman Conquest by Hugh de Belchamp, Beauchamp, or de Bello Campo, to whom William gave 43 lordships, chiefly in the county of Bedford. Between forty and fifty coats are assigned in the armorial dictionaries to this name, which, in vulgar parlance, is vilely corrupted to Beecham. The Itin. de la Normandie mentions a Beauchamp near Avranches, and a Beaucamp near Havre.' We did manage to clear up a problem. Online one can sometimes find a portrait that is claimed to be one of Joan Beauchamp. However, that is incorrect. Here is a short description about that portrait and who it actually was. You might be able to find a copy of it by doing a search. In 1566, Hans Eworth, a popular Flemish artist who was active from 1540 to 1573, painted a portrait of 'Mrs. Wakeman'. Eworth was a member of the Antwerp Guild of S. Luke in 1540. He came to England circa 1545 and his earliest known work was in 1549. There is found a number of dated portraits up to 1570. He was a Court Painter to Mary I, but then fell out of Royal favor until 1572, when he designed the décor and costumes for a fête staged by Elizabeth I. Some researchers have assumed the 'Mrs. Wakeman' portrait was of Joan Beauchamp Wakeman. While trying to locate permission to include the portrait in this volume, we discovered that the portrait had a companion portrait of Richard Wakeman, who was to marry Joan Thornbury (daughter of William Thornbury, Esq.) in 1567. We now assume that they were a set of wedding portraits and not one of Joan Beauchamp. Richard Wakeman is mentioned in The Wakeman Genealogy. He was probably John's uncle Richard 'of Beckford', Gloucestershire, England. The 'arms of the family' granted to him in 1586 was the same that had been previously granted to Bishop John Wakeman who died in 1549. As The Wakeman Genealogy states 'The theory of our descent from Roger Wakeman is the only trace we have of our ancestry prior to Francis, of Bewdley. Yet there is probably not the slightest doubt of our descent from one of the brothers of the bishop or from one of his father's brothers. This would make Sir Thomas [Wakeman] our direct ancestor.'" Ancestry.com offers: "Beauchamp Name Meaning - English (or Norman origin) and French: habitational name from any of several places in France, for example in Manche and Somme, that are named with Old French beu, bel 'fair', 'lovely' + champ(s) 'field', 'plain'. In English the surname is generally pronounced Beecham."
